Northstar 1500L Propane Lantern with Matchless Ignition

I had a lower lumen twin-mantle lantern by Coleman and it just couldn't hold up being in a salty air environment. I decided to upgrade to this model. I'm really glad I did. Obviously it puts off much more light. I got the carrying case for it as well which I feel is a necessity. It feels very well built and I'd buy it again in a heartbeat, if I didn't upgrade to the 3000 lumen lantern that Coleman builds. One quirk that I like about it is that as the propane runs out and the light dims, it really starts to whistle loudly. I'm assuming that's not an intentional design factor but it's really handy if you're not paying attention to it. The whistling really let me rotate through a bunch of semi-full one pound bottles without unexpectedly losing the light.

Much brighter than my old Coleman lantern.

Bought two of these for a large camping trip with the expectation to have them on more. They were a perfect stand in for a campfire (we were dealing with a fire ban) and the built in igniter worked right off the bat. I've replicated the low gas noise on the lantern, but surprisingly it seems if you reseat the propane canister it becomes a non-issue. The drawback with these lanterns are the mantle designs. These mantles are expensive in comparison to other lanterns, and should be expected to break while transporting them on long trips. My personal goal is to see if I can grab a box of them for a good deal and not have to worry for several years. I would recommend having 1 mantles on hand for each lantern you have to swap out when you arrive.

Great lantern from Coleman. Definitely lights up where you need it. Lost my last one in the Big D (and I don't mean Dallas), and when I saw this was on sale at 29% off (May 2025) I just had to grab a replacement. The globe guard is probably one of the big features that drew me to this model, and the Instastart works every time. You may or may not get a mantle with the removable plastic clips on it as shown on the box, but the traditional ones work just fine. I've never had a bottle of propane run out while using this thanks to the adjustable lighting, but the advertised times seem about right. Carry some spare mantles just in case, and of course, extra propane bottles. Worth it!

This Coleman NorthStar is seriously impressive. I'm a DIY'er and needed something dependable for off-grid lighting—this thing delivers. Lights up our whole camp area, and it’s so bright my wife’s even been using it to read her Bible study at night without any issues. Easy to use, feels durable, and puts out a ton of light. Definitely a solid pickup. Also bought the carrying case for storage when I'm not using it.

Covers all your needs as a stationary lantern. You can hang it somewhere on the campsite and it will lit the entire place. Case is desired, though the price difference is ridiculous. Extra $50 for the case?
