Early African American Figure
I especially liked the information about North Carolina's Alexander Lightfoot Manly, the nineteenth century African American journalist who stood up to the racists in Wilmington, NC in 1898. I had never heard of this man but was doing a short bio of him and was looking for information. This book fit the bill for that information. It also had information about author Charles Chestnut and his short story on Manly

Must Read!
Though written over a decade ago, this text is still incredibly relevant. In the U.S. where Black bodies continue to be policed and locked up at alarming rates--while the red herring of Black on Black violence continues to be dangled as an "explanation" for the police states that have been constructed in poor, Black neighborhoods--this analysis provides insight as to how peaceful demonstrations can morph into melees when the white supremacist police arm is used to "quell" Black outrage. I would highly recommend this text if you're interested in critical race studies.
