My stainless steel ring is warping when heated, which makes it hard for the bamboo to sit evenly. Is this supposed to happen or is it defective?

I would imagine not. Mine do not warp. Perhaps you are using too much heat? Once water is boiling you can turn heat down quite low. You need only maintain steam. If flame/heat comes up around the edges of the pot, I can see that warping the metal ring.
