Don't get at dealer!
During these Spring months the air quality was severe with pollen , mold and other respiratory evils. A visit to the Toyota dealer reminded me of the fact that the cabin air filter needed changing. Asked the cost and looked up on Amazon to check. Being 1/3 the price of the dealership, and offering pollen protection, guess where I got it! Perfect size fit and looked as good as original. Great value and fast delivery- good combination!

Which way does the air flow in the system?
Easy to install except that the direction of air flow isn't obvious from the markings on the filter housing or the owber's manual.

This appears to be a well made replacement cabin air filter for my 2008 Toyota Highlander. It has a carbon element which is supposed to reduce odors. It may do so, but I don't expect too much in that regard. Its primary purpose is to keep debris out of the AC/Heating system; freshening of the air, or removal of allergens would be a plus. If allergens is a concern, I would run the AC on "recirculate" as much as possible, which limits the amount of outside air coming into the car.The replacement is simple: 1) empty the glove compartment 2) disconnect the plastic cylindrical damper from the right side of the glove compartment. This will allow the glove compartment to drop further down 3) squeeze both sides of the glove compartment and lower it until it come off its hinge, and set it aside 4) lift the hinged filter access cover at upper left 5)remove the filter cover using the two tabs on its sides 6) remove the old filterThere is some confusion since the filter cover is marked "UP" with an arrow. The arrow on the cover is so you do not put the cover on upside down. The air flow is actually DOWN inside the blower unit, so you should align the new filter so its air flow arrow points DOWN. Feel free to run the fan without the filter, and test with a piece of paper. The paper will be pulled downward toward the fan.7) Insert the new filter, put on the filter cover with its arrow pointed UP, and close the hinged cover 8) replace the glove compartment on its hinge and move it up until the two catches on its sides snap into place 9) reattach the plastic cylindrical damper. This car is parked outside, and the filter was filthy with stuff that falls off trees and shrubs. If your car is garaged and you don't drive in dusty areas, you can probably go 2-3 years before another change. I plan to keep checking mine every year.
