The Internal Practices of Sun Lu-T'ang

Beautifully illustrated collection of valuable writings from Sun Lu-T'ang
A variety of essays by or about Sun Lu-T'ang, who is largely responsible for our contemporary understanding of "the internal martial arts." This is a real labor of love by the author. He could have simply provided the translated essays with a cover photo, but instead every page is carefully laid out with photos and artwork recreating the China that Sun knew and lived in. You get a real sense for the hardship but that makes his accomplishments and insights all the more remarkable. I take it as a an indirect indicator of the author's own accomplishments in these arts that he is self-effacing in offering his personal anecdotes, resisting the impulse to insert himself more centrally in their telling. Anyone with a love for the internal martial arts should have this in their library (even if, or indeed especially if, you have the Tim Cartmell and Dan Miller books about Sun).

Neijia practices not easily observed
Collection of essays explaining importance of hidden - internal principles and practices in Sun Lu-Tang art and their origins. I find these very interesting as they are not easily observed neither understood without proper teaching from the masters. It is really our good luck that Madame Sun has decided to open this hidden knowledge to the public,

Deep and Valuable Information
Some of the information is a bit hard to follow, only because it is so deep in understanding. The old knowledge is being left behind which is unfortunate because it is the very roots of the systems we take for granted today. If nothing else, buy this book as the excellent resource that it is. Thanks to the author for keeping it alive.

Disappointing, doesn't deliver
While the material is certainly interesting the book does not deliver on the title's promise. It's mostly a collection of essays and other works by the author, notes and material by Sun Jian Yun and others. It does not really offer probing insight into neijaquan and this is what initially drew me to buy the book. About 50% of the book is devoted to Sun Style sword - which is in my view off topic. This book, along with "Traditional Sun Lu-T'ang Style Tai-Chi Photographic Guidebook" and "Traditional Sun Lu-T'ang Style" should have all been in a single volume.
