what is the correct bait to buy

We buy bait by JT Eaton, specifically items 709-PN and 709-AP which is their Peanut Butter and Apple flavored baits. We mix them up, placing 4 of each bait in each bait station, two rods with the Peanut Butter on the Bottom and Apple on the Top, and two rods reversed. Not sure if it helps, but the rats disappeared pretty darn fast and stay gone as long as I remember to check and refill the bait stations. Additionally, these baits have what's known as a first generation rodenticide which while effective on rats , etc., have less risk to birds and larger animals that may eat a rat that has partaken of the poison bait. Unrelated note, Wish these stations had a window to avoid having to open them, but for the price it's hard to complain.

How wide is the opening? Could a squirrel get in?

You feeling like you need to kill squirrels is ridiculous.. unless you're going to eat them? but this is a bait station they eat the bait and die later. it takes the mice a long time to die from this, from what I've heard, so I'm pretty sure it's not going to be as effective on a squirrel. You don't need to kill squirrels though. If the squirrels are getting into your bird feeders and such, there's so many better ways to keep them out of it than killing them.
