The Cambridge Illustrated History of China is an illuminating account of the full sweep of Chinese civilisation โ from prehistoric times to the intellectual ferment of the Warring States Period, through the rise and fall of the imperial dynasties, to the modern communist state. Written by a leading scholar and lavishly illustrated, its narrative draws together everything from the influence of key intellectual figures, to political innovations, art and material culture, family and religious life, not to mention wars and modern conflicts. This third revised edition includes new archaeological discoveries and gives fuller treatment of environmental history and Chinese interaction with the wider world, placing China in global context. The Qing dynasty is now covered in two chapters, while the final chapter brings the story into the twenty-first century, covering the transformation of China into one of the world's leading economies and the challenges it faces. Lively and highly visual, this book will be appreciated by anyone interested in Chinese history. Review: Comprehensive but not overwhelming - To read a scholarly work on 5,000 years of Chinaโs history can seem daunting but Prof Buckley makes the material approachable and understandable. This updated edition adds more information on China in the 21st Century and breaks the Qin Dynasty chapter in two. This is a great tool for readers wanting a comprehensive introductory lesson on Chinaโs history from a respected scholar. Review: Unsurpassable Chinese History - See my review of her equally smashing book of Northern Song Emperor Huizong in her "Accumulating Culture".

Nice book. Poor from Amazon
This is not about the book per se, or content. But for ยฃ30+ not expecting to get sent a book with a damaged cover. Poor Amazon, very very poor.

Love the illustrations and the amount of research done to put this together.
I have only just started reading it but I love all of the pictures an illustrations. The introduction also explains the authors research and resources, including the people she consulted on this endeavor. I look forward to making my way through the details.

The Book is amazing but the packaging is poor
When I purchase a book that costs more than 20โฌ I expect it to be packed well at least - I don't understand why such a beautiful and relatively rare book has to arrive damaged because the seller didn't bother to wrap it up in plastic or something similar. The content and illustrations are amazing, it is really heartbreaking to see this attitude not only to the customer but to also to the beautiful edition.
