does the spigot stay "on" in any position or do you need to hold it to make water pour?

It will stay on when you flip the lever to the up position. You also need to loosen the white cap on top of the container to allow water to pour freely.

Could you use this to dispense liquid laundry detergent, or would the fluid be too thick to flow through the spigot? Thanks in advance for any reply.

I purchased 4 of these dispensers exactly with that purpose in mind 2 years ago. I dispense Tide, clorox2, Downy and Zum. They have all worked great except one recently won’t stop flowing. It is for my Zum cleaner which tends to harden inside the spickett. I have had to clean it out regularly and I think that has damaged it. I am here to purchase a replacement if it is available because they have been otherwise great and make my laundry room look so neat and clean.
