Salad Bar Beef

amazing book
This is a great book for any fledgling or experienced farmer wanting to produce quality beef. Joel’s tried and true methods of raising beef on 100% pasture, using intensive grazing methods are truly amazing. Please do not listen to the 1 and 2 star ratings from people who’ve never farmed or understand what he’s doing and get bent outa shape and their feelings hurt because Joel is strait forward and tells it like it is. Facts are facts people. If you can’t handle it, tough. If you’re gonna turn a blind eye and a deaf ear to the current food situation, if you want to stubbornly listen to the food police ( usda ) and Tyson and the industrial agriculturalists agenda, then do so, at the cost of your health and that of your family. End of story.

Great book
Joel gives great advice and life experiences. I would recommend this book to anyone. If you want to know how your beef is raised vs how it should be raised.

Joel is gonna make me quit my job
I've listened to all of Joel's audio books and I'm now working on his others, this one like the others makes me want to quit my day job and make a living on the farm. I love his out of the box thinking and have always considered myself to be of a similar mindset. Joel is doing an amazing job of leaving the world a better place and we should all strive to do the same.

An excellent and green concept
I recommend Salad Bar Beef to anyone in the country that wants to produce beef worth eating. Salatin is extremely open and honest about everything he does on his farm, and is very passionate about green farming. This book does not contain simple homesteading information; it is a manual on how to maximize profits, production, and soil fertility, while decreasing disease and stress(both cattle stress and farmer stress). When I said it does not contain "simple homesteading information", I did not mean that this book is complicated. Salad Bar Beef is actually one of the easiest agricultural books to comprehend.Although easy to comprehend, you can not by any means read this book with a conventional mind. Pretend you do not know anything, and carefully consider Salatin's points. If you begin reading this book and get the feeling that Salatin is strong in the way he presents his points, that's because he is. Many do not like being convicted, but the truth is, if you're never convicted, you never learn. Salatin makes his views clearly seen in his books, and every one of them are good and practical. Personally, I do not like reading a book in which the author is weak in his presentation of views.I have never read agricultural books as good as the ones that Salatin has written, and I recommend them to anyone interested in farming naturally. The books are high-priced, but worth double that. Before long I will raise poultry and cattle using Salatin's methods, using Salad Bar Beef as a manual. Too bad I can't give Salad Bar Beef six or seven stars.

Outstanding Book with Great Information and Ideas
I had read numerous grass-fed beef and rotational grazing books before I bought this one. The reason I did is because almost all of those books referenced this one. I figured if books I liked were referencing this book it must be a good one, and it is. There is great information on grazing, finishing, marketing, and general farm business in this book. Although at times the author gets on a political, legal, or environmental soap box, the good information in this book more than makes up for it. The author is a farmer that makes his living direct-marketing products from his farm, so you know this information is quality stuff. Reading this book also prompted me to buy this author's book Pastured Poultry Profits, which is also a great book if you are interested in pastured poultry. If you are interested in another good book on grass-fed beef, I highly recommend Grass-Fed Beef by Julius Ruechel.

beter than i thought
Based on some of the reviews, i thought this book would be a disappointment. Instead i enjoyed reading this book, but most importantly i learnt a thing or two.I find conventional grain fed beef farming foreign coming from New Zealand. My own cows and 99% of farmers in New Zealand practice pasture based beef. The one thing i strongly disagreed on was Salatins recommendation on slow cooking pastured beef steaks. They are best fried or BBQ'd medium rare. Pastured beef is not tough if fried corectly. Slow cooking should be reserved for the tougher cuts such as topside.

Lots of meat; Short on milk for “babes” like me (metaphorically speaking)
Love the Salatin books... well worth reading. That said, though this one is a bit heavier on specifics than some of his others, I still found myself wishing for more detail... that and a few suggestions for the very small scale homesteader more interested in feeding the family than in professional farming. Like so many books written by experts, I have found that what I really needed was a “for dummies” book... and there doesn’t seem to be such a thing out there, at least not for those of us interested in the more natural approach to animal husbandry.

Motivational farming business manual!
More than a book about farming, this is excellent reading about a family refusing to throw the towel on their farming in business and its breakthrough towards new and better ways of farming.
