For the bathtub can these be installed vertically or horizonitally or both ways? It is not listed which is the recomended way to install this.

The knurled diameter is 1 inch. The smooth section is slightly under - .980.

will this work on a tile shower wall?

I've put these bars on a tile shower/bathtub wall. I went on YouTube for the basics. You have to use masonry bits or diamond bits, but without much pressure. I also used a stud finder because I wanted at least one of the screws to go into wood, not just the insert plastic. My luck with stud finders held and I missed any studs. Using the inserts seems to work tho, because the bars are strong and holding up well. Can't overemphasize using a light touch when drilling into tile(practice on tiles, or buy tiles to practice on)

I asked what the wall clearance was and got a variety of answers. from 1 7/8 ( ok) to 2 1/8 (ok) to 3 inches!..(no way). no one knows ?

Okay, David, I took my measuring tape into the bathroom and measured from flat against the wall to the edge of the grab bar. Here is your answer: 2 inches. Final answer!
