Savage Worlds Deluxe: Explorer's Edition (S2P10016)

One of the Bright Stars in the RPG Universe
Nothing I can add to what's already been said about this fantastic roleplaying game. It truly is fast, fun, and furious (and I'd add a fourth "F" to the list too with "flexible").After years of D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder, I gave Savage Worlds a shot in 2011, and pretty much haven't looked back since. This is a GREAT game to introduce to those new to RPGs, as the flexible character generation lets them play any character they want without feeling like they have to sacrifice something because "well, that class you chose doesn't let you have that."It's so fast and easy to use, that it inspired two of my group members to try their hand at GM-ing, and both were wildly successful with it, because it makes it so easy for the GM to be working on the story and interacting with the characters, and not worrying about the rules. That said, even with Savage Worlds being easy to grasp and streamlined, there's still quite a bit of solid character-building options. You can easily create unique, fun-to-play characters, and its a cinch to move between different genres and settings as your mood takes you. It's hard to describe, but there is a unique, cohesive elegance to the Savage Worlds rules that really brings all of its varying elements together. Some people have said that this rulebook "doesn't read well," and that you need to really give it a chance at the table before passing judgement, but I never had that problem. For me Savage Worlds delivered in SPADES the fun it promised within the pages of the rules, far beyond what I could have hoped. If you're a long-time RPG player and haven't tried Savage Worlds, you are seriously shortchanging yourself. Pick it up and give it a shot.*Two final notes: I want to clear up a misconception that some reviewers seem to be passing around for this game. Some have insinuated that this game is really only good, for single, "one-off" sessions, or for running mini-campaigns of 6 or 7 sessions at the most. Nothing could be farther from the truth. I'm now in the middle of a campaign that is well past the year mark. It's still going strong, and none of us as players are anywhere close to "maxing out" the available options for our characters. Prior to that, I ran a campaign that lasted 15 months, and came to its natural conclusion, and the characters still had plenty of room to grow. Don't let other reviews fool you --- Savage Worlds is EXCELLENT for long-term campaign play.As for the size of the book: I was fortunate to pick up a hardcover copy of the rules while it was still widely available in print. If you can find the hardcover, I recommend it, even though it retails for $30 instead of $10 like the "perfect paperback" sized book, because I like the size and weight, and enjoy the larger versions of the artwork. But you're certainly not losing anything in terms of playability if you go with the softcover. The hardcover hasn't had a re-printing for a while though, so available copies are scarce at the moment.

This is the previous edition of the rules.
And even so, I bought it.The price in this case was just right and some settings still use the older rule set, though in many cases the update of one to three pages is all that is needed to get up to "SWADE."And it could be nice to have on the wall even so.I thought so at least.

You wanna play what? I think we can do that!
My gaming group was wanting to start a new campaign. As my wife and I prefer to use universal type systems, that have a computer based character generator, and the other players were looking for something where we could play anything but wouldn't get bogged down in either math, or days to crate a character, we were pleasantly surprised to find Savage Worlds. The system is relatively simple but flexible enough to be used in any genre from tradition dungeon crawls, to high space, from Broken Earth (Post Apocalyptic) to Superheroes. Moreover there is an excellent character generator for it from Lone Wolf that lets slap together a character in a matter of minutes, to spending an hour to create a specific character.Actual play is fast paced and doesn't require a lot of book keeping, allowing the players to focus on the story and actual roleplaying. The increasing die system along with the wild die is an interesting approach. To be honest the idea of using playing cards in the came turned me off as I've never been much a fan of card games, but when I saw how it actually worked, I was pleasantly surprised. Draw a card for initiative, and one or two die rolls per character for a skill/combat and move to the next one. No charts, no looking up rules, everything moves fast and smoothly. The best part of this system is like several other "universal" systems, the players and Game Masters are encouraged to create their own world settings as well as using those that sold by the company. Groups can literally use this game to reproduce everything from Hawk the Slayer (yeah, I'm giving away my age) to The Last Starfighter, from the Horrific Worlds of HP Lovecraft to reproducing Marvel and DC superheroes. (And some of them can be done far easier than in the "official" systems for those settings. This is NOT a D20 knockoff. The mechanics in this game are heavily influenced by a streamlined version of the original Deadlands Game. Five attributes that can range from a d4 to a d12 in value, plus the d6 wild dice make for some interesting options of the game. Best of all, with Savage World's Deluxe Explorer's Edition you can actually purchase a playable game without breaking your wallet. It's been a while since I've paid less that thirty dollars for a complete game.

Fast Furious and Fun
This core set gives you a framework for any genre of gaming, if you want to do all the work you can create your own world or adapt an existing background (eg Halo, Mass Effect, Skyrim or Red Dead Redemption) but there are plenty of great suppliments both official and fan created such as Star Wars, Victorian Steampunk and Deadlands. For the price you cannot leave it on the shelf.

Fast and Furious generic RPG system
This latest edition of the Savage Worlds RPG system is a terrific resource for Game Masters and players looking for a quick and simple system that can be quickly applied to any genre or environment. The Deluxe edition includes plenty of evocative artwork, GM guidance and "one sheet" adventure seeds, as well as all the rules for character creation, skills, edges, hindrances, combat and interactions. Savage Worlds encourages risk taking and heroic behaviour and offers the GM plenty of scope for customization to make adventures more or less threatening to characters' lives. An excellent addition to any RPG enthusiast's bookshelf.

... struggle to think of an RPG product which represents better value than this little book
Product- I struggle to think of an RPG product which represents better value than this little book.If you're looking for a simple system for a campaign which will be light on crunch and heavy on story, SW is the way to go. There's no way your players can complain about being asked to buy it, and it's both setting neutral and easy to add to.I could pretty much run every RPG campaign I've ever done using SW. I won't, because I like seeing other systems and other mechanics, but it really is that easy to use.Service: arrived quickly. Can recommend seller.

Best universal RPG system available
Savage Worlds is one of the most sleek, easy to run RPGs out there - and it's flexibility is unsurpassed. If you're looking for an RPG system that you can use to run pretty much any game in any setting, this is the one to go for. With just this book and a bit of imagination you are good to go with any gameworld that you want to build; but there are also several excellent expansions with detailed settings should you want to go further. It's also a great price. Totally recommended.

I have only recently got into Rollplaying games and was recommended this by a freind as I wanted to make a Fallout-esc style RP game. I cannot prasie this little book enough, SW is quick to get used to and is flexible to the DMs needs. The rules are simple and easy to learn and can be focused on encouters or on narritive. If you like RPing games but you want freedom to create soemthing enitrely new thats where savage worlds is best. You can go from one week playing a star wars style space opera, to the next being a zombie apocolpise! Its amazing! To add to that the quailty of the book is awesome and its smaller than youed expect, making it much more portable.
