Long regarded as the classic introduction to the teachings of the Talmud, this comprehensive and masterly distillation summarizes the wisdom of the rabbinic sages on the dominant themes of Judaism. "To some readers of this book, the Talmud represents little more than a famous Jewish book. But people want to know about a book that, they are told, defines Judaism. Everyman's Talmud is the right place to begin not only to learn about Judaism in general but to meet the substance of the Talmud in particular . . . In time to come, Cohen's book will find its companion-though I do not anticipate it will ever require a successor for what it accomplishes with elegance and intelligence: a systematic theology of the Talmud's Judaism." —From the Foreword by Jacob Neusner This classic introduction reveals the wisdom of the rabbinic sages on such topics as the doctrine of God; God and the universe; the soul and its destiny; prophesy and revelation; physical life; moral life and social living; law, ethics, and jurisprudence; legends and folk traditions; the Messiah and the world to come. Review: A really great version of the Talmud for the here and now - I've been finding that this is helpful in studying the Torah. It gives lots of things to think about as it is a oral tradition. It's more or less having Rabbi's right along side of you with discussing the traditions and giving you a good amount of knowledge of most every question you might have about living your life according to Torah. With Torah 'meaning instructions ' one is always going to have questions as to what something means. With the Talmud being a discussion helping to understand the questions you have. This particular Talmud I find alot to look forward to because it is easy to find what your looking for and then upon reading I find it gives me much understanding of what I need and am looking for. For such a small book its absolutely packed with information that you would be looking for that applies to the life here and now. I wish I had got this a long time ago. The only thing I wish is that it was the whole set of the Talmud because it would be so interesting, complete and I would love to read through them. But if your looking for a version of it that could be used everyday in the gere and now I would highly recommend this. You will not be disappointed. Review: Essential Parts of the Talmud for the Character of God and Man's Relationship to God - What I can I say? It's the Talmud separated into chapters with a reasonably good index. It's hard to rate this book: 1. If this review is for the Talmud itself, the Talmud is a legendary and epic revelation of theology. I'm a Christian and have learned an enormous amount from these writings. For those unfamiliar, the Talmud contains commentary on scripture (with references), traditional stories, and famous quotes of rabbinic scholars. It was compiled around 200 AD, with a rich historical background. 2. If this review is for this particular edit of the Talmud, it's a great copy. The whole Talmud is about 6,200 pages long, so obviously this book does not contain the whole thing. This book reduces the Talmud to the essential writings for the character of God and man's relationship to God. For those unfamiliar with the Talmud, this copy is an excellent starting point.

A great introduction to Judaic culture
I’m about halfway into reading the book and I’m absolutely in love with it. It is a very well drawn out introduction to mainly to the Talmud, and additionally with some references to the Mishnah and Midrash. In my opinion I do not recommend this for the average ordinary reader or researcher. This is only for those who are looking to enhance their interpretation of the Hebrew Scriptures, overall literary comprehension skills, and ability to look beyond the basic concepts of the Torah and Prophets and look into their deeper esoteric meanings.

Excellent Introduction
This is an excellent introduction to the Talmud. Cohen's work is well written, easity understood at it's basic levels, and extremely well organized. The book does not attempt to translate the Talmud, nor to cover it in exhaustive detail. What it does do is provide a flavor and history of Rabbinic thought, as well as discussing major theological themes presented in the Talmud in modern, straightforward language. Cohen opens with a 50 page introduction to the history of the Talmud and Rabbinic practice. He then discusses in some level of detail the Talmudic thrology behind the doctrine of the Creator, God and the universe, The doctrine of man, revelation and prophecy, domestic life, social life, morality, physical life, folk-lore, jurisprudence and the hereafter. A great book.

Well done introduction to those interested in learning Talmud.
This is an excellent compilation of wisdom and law from the Talmud. It is a good source for homelitics and further discussion and has been well researched. I recommend it to beginning students of Talmud and as a non-technical resource for further Talmud discussion and learning.

If you want a lucid, thoughtful, and well-organized approach to the Talmud, this is the book for you. It is considered a classic and, after reading it, I have to agree that it ranks as a classic for good reason. Whether you are Jewish and need some help approaching the rather daunting subject of the Talmud as a whole - or you are a Christian like me, who yearns to know more about the teachings and traditions of Judaism, but need a helping hand to introduce you to a subject that at first seems strange - Abraham Cohen's "Everyman's Talmud" is THE place to start. This book is an incredible resource, providing clear and organized information on and excerpts from the Talmud, but not only that - it is a testament to the wealth of moral teachings that define the Judaic Religion, and its timeless wisdom and goodness will resonate with many people of all religions and backgrounds.

A Brilliant and Condensed Portrait of Thinking Inherent in the Talmud
An extraordinary piece of scholarship, summarising into a systematic form, the basic theological/spiritual/cultural paradigms which both fed and are inherent in the Talmud. This work is helpful in redirecting the reader to the extraordinarily monolithic nature of Judaism across both time and geography, in contradistinction to much scholarship which seeks to – and often helpfully – shed light on the differences between various Jewish sects and periods. Abraham Cohen helps one to remember that Judaism is and has been both consistent in respect to key ideas about God and Israel, whilst producing breadth in the detail. Cohen reminds us that if you want the same hundred answers to one question, then ask a hundred rabbis how many gods there are.

Mooi overzicht van de hoofdlijnen van de talmoedische leer. Vaak hoor je over de Talmoed allen anekdotes, hier gaat het om de inhoud. Nuttig, overzichtelijk.
