Forgive the length of this review, but I hope readers will find it useful. I’ve been around the block when it comes to photography equipment. As an enthusiast photographer I’ve owned high end Nikon DSLR’s, Sony APS-C Mirrorless, and most recently a number of Sony FF A7’s, RX1R’s and Sony RX100’s. All of these excellent cameras. They say the best camera is the one you have on you, and I’m sorry to say that most recently in my case that has been my iPhone; my Sony FF kit while fantastic, is just too heavy to lug around. I love the RX100, but it’s almost too small! So, last year, after lamenting its lack of use I sold off the lot. My January resolution was to buy a decent Bridge camera, however these appear to be rarer than hen’s teeth unless you go for the massive and heavy Sony RX10 which would kinda take me back to where I was. Cue Micro 4/3. After a bit of research it became clear to me that the VERY small compromises I would need to make to adjust from FF to MFT were going to be more than worth it for the benefits gained with far smaller and lighter equipment. The Panasonic LUMIX G7, while an older model, is a breathtaking piece of kit. For less than a sixth of what I paid for my previous FF camera I have a camera that does everything that camera did, and more. (Yes, I accept the low light performance will be inferior, but that can be dealt with PP) I used to think Sony’s OS was unsurpassable, LUMIX is better! Autofocus - fast and efficient. Functionality - brilliant, the body can be customised so your ‘go to’ settings are always at your fingertips. Photos are crisp, clear, definition is fantastic even at 100% crop. I’d recommend the 12-60mm kit lens, it gives you a great range. But compliment that with a good, fast prime to get the most out of this camera. So long as you understand the adjustments you need to make (focal lengths are essentially double that of FF on MFT, so for a 50mm prime lens you instead buy 25mm) the format is superb, and you can actually use that smaller sensor size to huge advantage. I now have a kit, body, spare battery and three lenses that fit into a bag 1/3 of the size and weight of my old FF body and two lenses. I can carry my kit bag all day, and literally forget that it’s there. I’m falling in love with photography again, and this camera is why. Highly recommended.

As an owner of the Panasonic G6, I was a little worried that I wouldn't find the upgrade worth it. On paper, the improvements aren't massive unless you really want the 4k video. And I guess this is the 'killer' feature. As it happens I really like it. The dual control dials make this a much easier camera for anyone who is used to owning a pro spec DSLR to switch to. I found the G6's single command dial a pain to use. The solid feel of the dial is so nice I find myself spinning the dials just for fun. Sad I know! High ISO performance has been improved. Out of the camera JPG's look pretty clean at ISO 6400 and RAW's I applied a dollop of noise reduction in post. Still very usable given the sensor is way smaller than a full frame Nikon D750 I am used to. The AF seems spot on and I don't feel like it's slow. And of course with this being a CSC, Panasonic have given us a truly silent shooting mode. This came in so handy at a recent wedding where I could discretely take photos without anyone even hearing a click. All in all I really really like the G7 and I feel like it's been a good value upgrade from the G6. This will be ideal as the camera I do video work with and use for stills on family outings.

Great camera, Very good at picture quality and amazing at videos. If you are getting this camera, the main reason should be for videos. The pictures are great but the main purpose of the camera is for 4k videos.

Superb camera. Light and full of features. Be careful if you buy an external flags, as you must buy one that is specifically for micro four thirds cameras. I have just ordered the Nissin i40, as all the photo shops say that for the money it is the best one for this camera. The TTL feature is a must for quality photos without drowning out the subject. I also bought the adapter, so I can use all my Canon lenses with it. 4K video is top quality, however ensure your computer can cope with it. I have a 10 year old Mac Pro and it wasn't good enough. Thus, I had to spend £2700 on a new Mac Pro. Obviously, there is no need to spend that amount of money, just make sure the machine can cope. All in all, a top buy.
