From experience, I find these are usually related to a clogged filter, or rather the base tries to suck the debris out of the vacuum unit, and senses a low pressure differential which it then INTERPRETS as something not being installed. This is particularly frustrating when you're trying to solve a problem! I was also getting a fair amount of the vacuum "flap" on the vacuum unit being propped open with small debris that should otherwise be cleared out - that was also a signal that the base just didn't have the ability to empty the vacuum unit. All this said, there are a few filters in the unit which you need to clean regularly depending on what you have in your home. For us with a husky, that means cleaning things a couple times a week.
