A Very High Quality, Sturdy, Made in the USA Flashlight!
I've purchased many flashlights over the years, only to find out they are aren't very bright, or are very cheaply made and break easily. I wanted a flashlight that was reliable, sturdy, bright and would last for years! By golly, I believe I've GOT it! Since we have power outages during just about EVERY rain storm in the high desert, we have to do resets outside on a power pole on the property. NOW I can SEE out there, as it's PITCH DARK out here at night, with snakes, scorpions and other crawlies on the property. I can also use it to see what's going "bump in the night" if I hear noises other than howling coyotes and wild packs of dogs in the middle of the night. Not only that, if there's an actual prowler on the property, this sturdy badboy could also be used as a weapon to CONK a prowler in the noggin if need be. I'm planning on buying another one for my car, in case of a breakdown. I highly recommend that everyone has a few of these heavyweight flashlights. They also come with a spare bulb located under the end cap, which is a nice feature, as you don't want to get caught with your lights out!

Clonk someone over the head with this Maglite and he stays clonked.
This is my third Maglite--the first two both had leaking batteries, although I don't think that was the fault of the flashlight. Anyway, I keep this flashlight on my bed table in case of one of our numerous power outages. It is nice and hefty and doesn't get knocked over easily, and is a cinch to find in the dark. If someone breaks into the bedroom, I can clonk him over the head with it and he'll stay clonked. The beam is powerful enough so that I can shine it out the bedroom window and check on which particular wild animal is munching the flowers in my garden. I've seen bear, opossums, raccoons, deer, and flying squirrels caught in the beam of this Maglite. When my second Maglite bit the dust because of leaky batteries, my husband got me one of those small, effeminate bluelight specials, which I soon lost. That's when I bought number three from this website, and I'm never going to be without a Maglite again.

Best Flashlight on the Planet
I now own three of these flashlights and I have to say they are the absolute best flashlight I have ever purchased and are well worth the price. Having said that, however, I do have a couple of recommendations. First, if you look at the difference in the price of a red one versus a black one (the red is half the black), I recommend you go with the red. I know the black one must be more poular, but who can tell the difference in the dark anyway! Second, I recommend that you shop around for a LED upgrade kit for the bulb of your Maglight. Although the newer Xenon lamps in these are better than the old traditional bulbs, they just can't deliver the high lumens (some LED upgrades can deliver 140 lumens) that an LED can provide. And, if you take my first advice on buying the red flashlight you can upgrade the LED and still spend no more than you would for the black flashlight. These flashlights will provide you years of service and they are nearly indestructible. Highly recommended.

Good Old Flashlight
Extremely durable, high quality, everyone knows the MagLite. I think I bought my first MagLite almost 20 years ago now and there are no obvious difference between it and the one I just bought. However, I'm going to take one star off just because it hasn't changed in 20 years. Over 10 years ago, I held in my hands a flashlight that made an evenly lit circle of light, yet the MagLite beam is still a mottled mess. Why can't they put some effort into improvements? Aluminum gets bent and scraped up easily. A high quality plastic could be at least as durable, possibly lighter, and would damage floors, cars, furniture as much when dropped. Just as another option in a line of quality flashlights, not a replacement. What about a lithium ion battery rechargeable? Much power in a very small package. Seems like they could progress a little... and no, I don't really like the light from the LED version.

Stick with what works
I bought one of these about 20 years ago when I first got into law enforcement. I needed a reliable, bright flashlight that would hold up to years of use. I still have that flashlight. It still works flawlessly. I needed another reliable flashlight for my RV toolbox. No question what I was going to put in it. When it arrived, I could see right away that this Maglite is the same high quality I have in my original. Very solid, well built. Still has the extra bulb in the rear cap housing. The transition from spot to flood is smooth, as expected. The on/off switch hasn't changed a bit, it feels and sounds just like the original. They found a combination that works and have built a reliable product.

Not bright enough
Stong and sturdy exterior, but the bulb was bent to the side when it arrived. No batteries supplied with it.

Fantastic Flashlight!
Heavy Duty, and casts a great strong beam of light that you can adjust. VERY easy to use and very easy to change batteries

BRIGHT LIKE A KITCHEN MATCH
Everybody knows how maddening it is when a flashlight runs on tired batteries. Instead of cutting through the darkness, the beam comes out in a dull, yellowish glow. You're left squinting, leaning closer, trying to see objects in the pale, dim beam. "Can somebody please strike a match so we can see if the flashlight's on." That's what you get with this Maglite 2-cell D flashlight: a pitiably weak beam instead of the "powerful projecting beam" that Maglite advertised. The flashlight's tiny, match-head, 27-lumen incandescent bulb is the culprit. Before posting this negative review, I asked AI to review the Maglite 2-cell D flashlight. AI responded, "The stock 27-lumen incandescent bulb is barely usable by modern standards." So how many lumens make a flashlight bright? According to AI, "400–1000 lumens is recommended for outdoor use when you want a clearly visible, strong beam." A bright flashlight, therefore, requires 14 to 37 times more lumens than the 27-lumen Maglite bulb is capable of. I was excited when I opened the package. The Maglite had a heft I liked; it's built from heavy-gauge, anodized aluminum. It doesn't rattle, and the head, tail-cap, and battery tube all thread together smoothly unlike some plastic flashlights. The head and tail-cap have weather-resistant seals. The flashlight is even "made in America," according to the Product Specifications. OK. Sounds good. Unfortunately, before buying this flashlight, I completely missed that a 27‑lumen incandescent bulb delivers an extremely weak, almost useless beam. That it's made in America doesn't overcome the defect. In fact, I feel betrayed. The Maglite has a strong body— but a weak heart. There's one thing Maglite should have included with the flashlight: a pair of night-vision googles so you can navigate in the darkness. When you switch on the flashlight with two fresh 1.5‑volt D cells, don’t expect “bright sunshine.” Expect “total eclipse.”

Make sure you choose the LED model
It is heavy but sturdy and casts a lot of light. I am using it at home for those occasions when the power goes out. This does the trick. Make sure to keep spare batteries as well.
