Fury of a Phoenix (The Nix Series Book 1)

Liked it enough to order the sequel
I have mixed feelings about this book. I wanted to love it; I read it straight through. However, I didn't like the main character, who was basically a former mob enforcer. She's driven by rage with two magical guns who (yes, "who" is correct here) egg her on. I really liked the dog, though and there was a hook at the end that got me to pre-order the next book in the series.I think part of my problem is that I got dropped into an urban fantasy world that didn't get much explaining. Are "abnormals" good/bad/just normal folks with magic/something else? What is their status in the world?I did like some of the twists and turns, but the problem with first-person narrative is that the reader is as surprised as the character at those twists. I prefer to have some foreshadowing, though. If you are a fan of the author, you will probably like the book. If you are a fan of urban fantasy, you might try it out. I suspect the next book will be better. This book really deserves 3.5 stars; I gave it 4 because I liked it enough to get the sequel.

Move Aside John Wick ... Nix is Here.
Nix is the female version of John Wick with a touch of the supernatural and a deal with the devil. She is a total bad a**. This is a bit outside the normal for Shannon Mayer and I am so glad she decided to take the risk with this book. It was certainly worth it. I loved it. Nix was an assassin, the person her father sent in when things didn't go the way he wanted them to. She left that life to live in rural America with her husband and son. One fateful night and all that's taken from her. Hell hath no fury than a woman whose lost her child. Retribution shall be hers. In her search for the one's responsible for her family's deaths, she discovers her quiet life was built on lies, not just her own. This book kept me on the edge of my seat. There were several times my heart started pounding. I am looking forward to the rest of the books in this series. This just might be Shannon Mayer's best series so far β¦ and that's saying something.

Just WOW!!
Phoenix is trained by her father to be a hit"woman" for her father who has made a deal with the devil and acquired 3 abnormals to help in his shady business. After her sister kills herself, Phoenix has had enough. She buries her sisters body where no one can find her and she inherits the Guns her sister owned. No ordinary guns they are magical. Phonenix takes on her sisters identity and runs to Wyoming to start a new life. She finds that with Justin whom she marries and they have a Boy named Bear. Justin and Bear are her life. Raising and selling horses on their ranch fills their days. Things go suddenly bad and while heading home they are in an awful accident and the truck goes in the water. As Phoenix tries to save Justin and bear someone walks up and shoots Justin in the head. Bear is drowning and she tries to save him but someone knocks her In the head. She thinks this is all because she has been found but as she digs she realizes Justin was not who he claimed to be. So starts her investigation to see who killed her family and why. I read this book in 10 hours I could not close it! Cannot wait till book 2 which will be out September!!!

A must read
Iβm so glad Shannon branched away from Rylee universe...the darkness and depth of this new series is quite engaging! You start with the debilitating loss of Nixβs son, not as a past incident, but as a raw up close and personal experience we feel right alongside her. We are present the moment she decides to fall back on her past life and wreck havoc to whomever stands in her way of revenge.World building is slow and steady, you start in a normal world and as Nix breaks more paranormal aspects come out. Itβs an ingenious way to introduce readers to a new world, so much better than dumping it all in the first chapter and sprinkling reminders throughout the book. Characters are even better built than the world, you spend the entire book wondering who can and cannot be trusted. The wonder keeps you begging for more and unable to put the book down. Some of the best parts of Shannonβs writing is that her characters are not perfect. Every reader can relate on some level to the heroine which enables them to feel along with the character and not view from the outside. The absolute best way to be immersed in a book.

I read 10 chapters of this book and couldn't take any more!
I typically love Shannon's books; so much so that I bought all 3 Nix books before reading book 1. I deleted all 3 from my kindle. there was so much killing and death. not sure it was really sad because author didn't make room for that. Lots of joy in killing, in revenge. everyone she loves dies or has a disease or had secrets. there was not one good thing in 10 chapters! I also don't understand the high reviews. Shannon's other books are much better. There was a lot of repetition of words & phrases and they became just filler. I looked at the first sentence of book 2 and it was just as bad...so that's it for this series! I need a character to care about. Find something else of Shannon's; skip this series!

Rylee was my first love but Phoenix is my spirit animal.
I've been reading Shannon Mayer's books for several years now. Her Rylee Adamson and Elemental Series are some of my favorite books. That being said, Phoenix has quickly become my favorite bad@$$ protagonist. This book starts with a bang and doesn't slow down. When I ran out of pages I wanted more. Phoenix is a shoot first ask questions later kind of woman. She is a highly trained assassin who gave up that life for a husband and son she loves more than anything. When that is taken away from her God help anyone who gets in her way. Add in a bit of magic and you have a fantastic supernatural thriller. I am looking forward to continuing Phoenix's story. The rest of the trilogy can't come fast enough!

This Is An Epic Supernatural, Urban Fantasy Style ~ Mafia Revenge Read!π²π₯π₯
Extremely Tense & Emotional.πππ₯ 4.5 Stars πFury of a Phoenix (Nix, #1)Wow, this was unexpected & so emotional!π³πππBea is a very socially awkward Wife & Mum. She absolutely adores her son, Bear, he's the most kind hearted human she's ever met, her husband Justin, is kind & loving, he'd helped her adjust to her new life. Bear was the image of her Father though & he is the most vile human!!π‘π He's a Human Mob Boss but wants into the big leagues with the Abnormals. He made an actual deal with the Devil to gain growing money & power as well as three Guardian's!!π³πWhen she was a child she was called Phoenix. Her Dad had four older children by his first wife, three boys & one other girl, Bianca. It was her death that woke Phoenix up to just how diabolical & dire her life was. Her father had let her train to become his Enforcer/Assassin. She was deadly & ruthless & she was losing herself to it all.π So she escaped & went into hiding with some help!π But now they'd called her back, she's not the quiet Bea anymore. Who ever came after her family should be running scared, because the Phoenix will be setting their World on fire!!π₯This is an unsettling but compelling read. I had so much compassion for Nix, from her childhood traumas to finding love & happiness, she'd had to constantly battle for a place in the world & to try & keep them safe!π I'm intrigued to see where the Author takes this fascinating story!ππDebbie, 1970, UK

Knock out hit
There's always a little tinge of worry when a favourite author releases a new book in a brand new world, new characters, new mythology and new themes, especially when there are so many outstanding books in a brilliant series. However let me assure Shanon Mayer fans and new folks alike, this book blew my mind away! The sheer force of emotion and character that that you can almost palpably feel coming off this book is a force to be reckoned with. Nix is a character that stole my heart immediately and while she goes from thinking she knows all around her to discovering that nothing is at it seems, she faces one betrayal after another. At times gut wrenching and heart breaking, at others it takes you on a breathless non stop action journey, where Nix kicks some serious butt and grows stronger than ever. Fascinating world building, this should please anyone who likes to blend a bit of mafia into their magic! Brilliant! Another knock out hit from Shannon Mayer.

This was a whole new experience to me and I loved it! It was a great mix of abnormal ...
I'm new to Shanon Mayer's world. (I've read only 2 books her co-written with DGS and finally got hooked and wanted to read more of her books)First book in a brand new series in urban fantasy. This was a whole new experience to me and I loved it! It was a great mix of abnormal vs normal, mystery, thrill and action. It captivated me from the beginning to the end with all twists and turns keeping me on the edge guessing, hoping and proving me wrong most of times. That's why I loved this so much!I love Nix, the strong highly skilled assassin who escaped once that harsh world her father created but now she is back for revenge, and that is the dish better served cold! All the characters are unique, even the talking tools Dinah & Eleanor and Lynx!I'm glad I have the next book already so I only have to wait for final one.

Surprised
Well, certainly not the book type I was expecting, but, my god. talk about a book to grab you and start running. Nix. has lost everything, except for what she was made to be as a young woman, a child really. Now she's on a mission. No one else's. A mission she will have to win. For her to lose is not an option she can even think about.

A dark introduction
This is a very dark book with some humor here and there that leans towards the black. There seems to be a missing part at the healers death at the hand of stick man. The whole scene makes no sense. It irritates. I need to know what happens next and have already downloaded the next one and will be reading it after this review.
