The shave was great! Almost 12 hours later
This product has received some very unfavorable reviews on various shaving sites. The usual complaint is that the lather too quickly dissipates, leaving only a film. I tried Musgo this morning with a Merkur 39C and a brand new Feather blade. I also used Kiehl's face cleanser with warm tap water, and Musgo's shaving oil.The shave was great! Almost 12 hours later, my face still feels smooth. I was actually impressed that the lather seemed to stick around. In addition, the scent is very nice.Okay, it is not quite the equivalent of some of the very high end Italian and French soaps, but it is a fraction of their cost.I am guessing that Musgo may have changed their formula; most of the terrible reviews were from 2010 and prior.

Musgo Real ultimately came through as advertised - top rated!
I may change my mind later but i really had HUGE hopes for this soap given the reviews and ratings from various sites I read when looking to switch from crème to soap**** UPDATE ****I did change my mind. This is now my favorite shaving soap now that i've found my preferred lathering method. I recommend hand or straight-to-face lathering as you can feel the lather and how its building and its consistency that way. I know overload the brush purposely, start lathering on my face, then add water little by little while lathering on my face until it thickens and i can still feel slickness to it. Very easy vs a bowl where you can see the lather but not know by looks whether it's still slick or not (Musgo always ended up being just non-slick foam when i lathered in a bowl). yes.. "well just touch it while you lather in a bowl" - right.. but if i'm going to constantly being stopping to touch it to test it.. why not just lather in-hand or on-face altogether? Thus my new method.Done this way - Musgo Real triple-milled soap feels AWESOME! is GREAT! And keeps its moisture relatively well compared to the other soaps i originally rated higher. (This is where the skin-friendly ingredients really shine). The lather you get will be just as thick and rich as cremes - but much slicker and friendlier for your shave. This WILL REMAIN my goto (with maybe some Col Conk slipped in there if i want more scent now and then) - unless the shaving oil experiment/reviews are as advertised. (I'm reading a lot more now that people are turning to shaving oil ~ usually considered a pre-shave layer ~ now just use it as their "shaving creme" by itself. it's slicker (the key!), quicker (no lathering stage), more efficient (just a few drops with water and rub on face...), and shave (easier to see what you're doing with much less bulk and even some translucency on your face). Lastly, it supposedly works like a post-balm too (don't need to wash it completely off). This potential of shaving oil being all you need is especially intriguing to me as it is highly compatible with shaving in the shower (no brush, no bowl needed) and also negates any worries about what to do when you travel as it potentially can be a single product travel-size-friendly replacement for - brush, bowl, soap/creme, alum, after-shave, AND balm all in one (many say they are not rinsing off fully the shave oil and leaving it on as an after-shave/moisturizer combo)... and maybe the perfect daily shave for those of us that can't afford 30 min rituals before going to work **** Imagine that.. just a razor and a small bottle of shave oil as your ENTIRE shave gear? Wow...So that is the next experiment for me. Look for my review on shaving oil experiences in the upcoming weeks.Happy Shaving....UPDATE 2:I have now been exclusively wet shaving using just a shaving oil - and have now moved my shaving routine into the shower. This setup is quicker, cheaper, and with far better results. No need for a brush, bowl, stand, alum bar, tonic, after-shave, or anything else.Just my razor, a loaded blade, and a few drops per pass in the shower (the shave oil + shower steam are the ultaimte face and whisker prep, as well as slick protective coating for both your skin and blade (blade life doubles when shaving using oil over creme/soap lather). It works SO well i have a closer shave usually within 2 passes with this setup, then I can ever get with a traditional lather/3-pass. (this includes a small handfull of head-shave sessions with 2 weeks growth of very thick / coarse asian male hair).Shave Oil has lived up to all teh hype and thensome. So wet shaving has become even more coss effective, as well as faster and more effective. Lastly.. no more worries about a home vs travel setup for wet shavers. Your setup of a razor, a blade, and a bottle (usually small bottles for shave oils) is a 100% mobile system. You just can't do any better than that. (Hell, it's even convinced me that razor and/or blade selection becomes more trivial when using shaving oil).

A Superb Shave Soap
My hubby bought this in his quest to find a replacement soap for his normally used Tabac. He loves it! His shaves with the Musgo are very close with smooth skin and no razor burn (uses a Merkur Futura razor sporting an Atra 3 blade) afterwards. The lack of razor burn was key to his continued use. It lathers very well and with thick, rich lather that he says stays very moist throughout the shave. He uses a Merkur Silvertip Badger brush and can get the soap lathered up in less than a minute with a very thick consistency. He continues to lather it onto his face, working the soap into an even thicker lather. "Brush hot, shave cold" is his motto. So, the razor is kept rinsed under cold water. He says he can easily get "3 passes" with the brush lather, as it stays thick. However, the soap's scent is a bit odd smelling to him. He says its like a smell he had as a kid of an old barbershop his Dad went too some 60 years ago. But, it has something else tossed in, and he doesn't know what it is. Anyway, I like it, as It's a lot softer than the Tabac scent. I think it disappears within say, 15 minutes. And, it doesn't change his aftershave or his balm's scents. Nice. He's going to try the Oak Moss tube shave cream next as well as the Musgo Real Aftershave Balm. It does look like he's found an excellent replacement for his Tabac. I asked which was better and all he could say was, "Each is different and thus, are the best for what they do." Men! I'm taking that to mean he's going to stay with the Musgo...for now. Good!

it doesn't get big headlines or shoutouts, but its the real deal for a "non headline-brand price"
I've been wet shaving now for about 3 yrs or so - and I've gone from learning curve, to experimentation, trying this brush, that brush, this razor or blade, and trying different soaps and crèmes. Now that I am at the point I can experience, feel, and understand the differences - I've come back to Musgo Real to try it again.I can really feel and see the difference between this soap and the others and creams. Everybody will tell you they love their lather and it "lathers up well" - but Musgo Real does not require a lot of product or prep or "whipping up" to get it going. Where as I might have to baby some other brands this just "works".This time around I can appreciate the difference in how it FEELS going on as well. It's a soap that feels as thick as a crème and maintains it pretty well (sure i might re-load once or twice - btw I tend to shave my head and beard together - but all it takes is 1-3 swirls and i'm all re-loaded up like new).Now. the biggest difference I've felt this time around having gotten very used to other products for about a year.. is post-shave! It really does feel like you already put a post-shave balm or moisturizer on your face (and head!) - and it stays there a while. So yeah.. experiencing and staying with a setup for a while helps to establish a solid baseline to help, then, judge other products. I'm ready to dump my other products (or put them in storage) and just go with this now (maybe the "occasional" experimentation with something else).oh yeah.. this just smells nice and clean (no wood, dust, cigar, smoke, citris, woods, vanilla, etc.) - just good, clean, honest sublte but lasting scent.
