no need to tolerate broken spiral springs if you can lift them out and replace with new. Usually sashes last much longer than springs.

The product was fairly priced and shipped quickly, but did had to modify it. The end section has to be ground or rounded off to hook onto the spring ends. Pretty straight forward to use and did the job. Prior to purchasing, I have used needle nose vice-grips, which will work in a pinch, also.

The slots in the tip are too short and the spring slips out. The crank bend area is too small. You cant crank it with both hands. You have to use one hand and use your thumb to add the twists.

If you think you can get a spiral balance installed without this, or a tool like it, you're gravely mistaken. The ten plus dollars you spend on this tool will save you a thousand dollars' worth of aggravation. Keep the tool as straight up-and-down with the balance as you can to prevent it from slipping out of the balance feet while tensioning the rod. This straight up-and-down position also keeps the new balance from breaking internally. Most of you aren't making a living with this tool, you're just fixing your house windows. If I could give it ten stars, I would.

Without this tool installation and tightening of the balances are impossible, the tool worked great

The two curved arms will bend if you try to put more than five turns on your springs. Bend in rod not enough to get a good grip to turn springs.

I really resisted the idea of spending money on a tool that would only have a short use. So, I tensioned the rods with pliers, which was a bad idea. I don’t think that they broke the rods, but I can see how they could easily break by using pliers instead of the tool. After a few windows, I decided to order the tool—it was difficult and frustrating (and time consuming) using the pliers. Using the tool was much easier, and I think would’ve been worth it if I had just bought it in the beginning.I gave it four stars instead of five only because it still slips sometimes, scaring me half to death with a tension rod that suddenly loses tension.
