I give up! Returning the Ellipse because I can't trust it.
May 25 2017 Update Coming home from work yesterday, the Elllipse app said my battery was low. I was parking the bike in my condo garage, so I didn't want to use it since there are no convenient electrical plugs. I locked my bike with my trusty Kryptonite lock, took the Ellipse upstairs and left it outside on my porch overnight. Even though it was dark, the next AM said it was fully charged! So I'm returning the lock because I can't trust it. 1. Said it was locked on the app, but fell out twice while riding - resulting in broken spoke and fender - $100 repair. 2. App sometimes requires phone reboot - not "seamless" Bluetooth connection 3. App mis-reported battery level - was it full or low? The Lattis people do read these comments and respond - so that's a plus. But in my experience, it is not as simple or trustworthy as an old fashioned keyed U-lock. Previous review: I wanted this lock because I have 3 bikes and it would be great if I could use an app to unlock them without having to carry around a bunch of keys. So like anything else, there are good and bad things with this lock. Good -App works pretty well - most of the time -Touch pad is a nice feature - most of the time -Seems to keep a full charge when outside Bad -U-lock is pretty short. With my Kryptonite lock, I could lock the frame and front wheel, but not with the Ellipse -Locking seems inconsistent and this can be disastrous! I keep my lock attached/slotted in my rear pannier rack. It's fallen off twice when it says its locked. This resulted in the U falling into my spokes and destroying my back fender. I think the two sides of the lock are independent, but don't always seem to engage equally? -Sometimes you get a warning that the U is not engaged, but the two times the U has fallen off, the app says it was locked. -App doesn't always recognize the lock. I've had to reboot phone to get it to recognize the lock. When that happens, it seems that the touchpad on the lock doesn't work either, are they connected/related? -It's pretty much a two handed procedure to lock/unlock. Have to hold the phone and also juggle the phone and the lock. I live in the frozen tundra, so I hope the proximity unlocking feature works - haven't tried it yet. Overall, locking and unlocking your bike takes longer with the Ellipse than a typical key lock. I like technology,, but not sure if this is an advance over the old fashioned U-lock with a key. But I'm keeping an open mind.

Good idea. Terrible execution
Wanted to like this device since the competitor's offering (Noke U-lock) is still in development, but after two weeks of hassle it's going back to meet its creators. 1. The phone will lose connection with the lock with just a few feet of distance in direct view, not to mention any sort of walls or other barriers. So forget about notifications feature in case someone is tampering with the bike. This feature is a dud. 2. The phone will not pair or recognize the lock automatically. I ended up manually re-pairing just to unlock. This is super annoying and I ended up spending several minutes tinkering with my super duper lock on a number of occasions. Last weekend by the time I was done locking up my bike and finally caught up with my friends, one of them was already half way through his beer. That's the last thing anyone would want from this experience - getting ridiculed by peers after spending 3 times the cost of a regular lock. 3. The manual unlock feature using a pass code is a hit and miss, with more misses in my experience. 4. The shackle has no rubberized coating so it will scuff your bike INSTANTLY. It also makes a really unpleasant grating noise when it comes in contact with other metal surfaced. Why??!! 5. A $200 lock comes without a mount. That's just obnoxious. 6. I was unable to set off the alarm on this lock. No amount of shaking or kicking would activate it. What the hell? This is one of the main reasons I bought the damned contraption. Take this product back to the drawing board. This lock is not ready for the prime time.

Strong lock with high tech features!
This lock feels very sturdy and the app gives you great theft detection alerts. I saw other reviews that said that the lock wasn't long enough, but when connected through the real triangle around the wheel, it fits just fine, even on bike with larger tires. A longer lock would make it easier to use a portable angle grinder or a jack to break the lock. The lock has a keypad with a programmable PIN that can be used to unlock the Ellipse if your phone battery is dead. Even living in the rainy and overcast Pacific Northwest, the solar panels of the lock were able to gather enough energy. In the winter when my bike is store in the office, I can plug the lock into a USB charger. The app can be set up to either lock or lock based on the distance from your phone. My wife loves that there is even crash detection, so if I crash the Ellipse lock will send her an alert.

Some Initial Troubles, But Now All Good
Ours needed some kind of resetting when it arrived. And one time it wouldn't open up to let the metal piece back in. But eventually, we were able to get everything to work. In theory, it's a great product. A little more time will tell if it's perfect or still finicky, but so far, so good, I suppose.

worked fine in general until sudden death after 6 month
was really glad to have it, worked well...'cause more often than keys I carry my phone around...anyway, 6 month after purchase...the lock crashed ...maybe latest firmware update was part of that issue...hard to say..as I am trying to get an answer from lattis support since a month or so...
