Heat Wave: The Extraordinaries, Book 3

Creative Deeds Reads Review
“My name is Shirley and I’m a self-proclaimed book addict.” I should also mention that I’m not seeking a recovery program for this addiction. Seriously though, you might also be a book addict if you pre-order a certain book, by a certain author immediately after requesting the ARC. Guilty as charged. In my defense, I’ve only done this a hand full of times, but with this particular author, I take no chances on not getting my hands on anything he writes. Now that we’ve gotten the embarrassing stuff out of the way…Heat Wave was the final installment in T.J. Klune’s Extraordinaries series and he didn’t hold back on the action, adventure or heartbreak in bringing this series to a satisfying end. These characters have come a long way since their introduction in The Extraordinaries. Nick started out wishing more than anything to be among the Extraordinary heroes he admired in Nova City. He soon learned that nothing is truly as it seems and not all heroes are really, well… heroes. The action continued and more secrets were revealed in Flash Fire, where the characters left readers hanging and cursing the #EvilAuthor (aka T.J. Klune) at the close of the second book. Which brings us to the events that took place in Heat Wave. The cards were definitely stacked against #TeamLighthouse throughout most of this story. The police were corrupt and under the control of someone even more corrupt. Someone who would stoop to pretty much anything to stop anyone who got in his way. At times it seemed that the odds against them were insurmountable, but they had something that their enemies didn’t have… each other. Was Heat Wave sometimes campy and over the top? Well, yeah it was, but that campiness and comic relief broke the tension. These kids weren’t only fighting evil, they were also dealing with the real life stuff that happens when awkward teens are turning into young adults. There were some unexpected allies gained and that caused them to put their trust in people that wasn’t easy. Danger was even closer at times than they realized, but through it all, they had each other’s backs. And once again, I’ve turned a review into a rambling mess, but that seems to always happen when I review one of T.J. Klune’s books. A lot of his books end up on my re-read list and I’m sure that the Extraordinaries will be among them.

This is why I love TJ Klune...
This is why I love TJ Klune books, you can finish them so quickly. Out of all three Extraordinaries stories, Heat Wave was my favorite by far. Heat Wave had the tightest story, the best character arcs for a majority of the characters, and the twist was utterly satisfying. The overall theme about not hiding behind your truth really hits hard. TJ Klune took that theme and ran with it and what helped was the final chapter really encompassed that theme. Heat Wave also has one of the sweetest Epilogues. After I finished reading I thought to myself I want another series following these characters in the Later. Bravo TJ Klune you have done it once again!

A fantabulous conclusion to the series
Oh my goodness. This book deserves all the stars. TJ Klune should get his own rating scale. This book is a crazy, comedic masterpiece encompassed in a beautiful, heart warming deeply emotional story of love, family, and finding your people and your path. Expect to feel all the things - expect to laugh (a lot), to swoon, to bite your nails, to roll your eyes, to be verklempt, to scream in frustration, and to cry. This is book 3 in the Extraordinaries series and picks up where book 2 left off as we follow the continuing adventures of Nick, Seth and their friends and family. The main characters and all the villains are still present as Nick and friends balance and struggle on the cusp of adulthood while the citizens of Nova City continue to deal with the issue of humans with powers. In the end good will triumph over evil but there will be pain and growth in the journey. The story includes what you’d expect from this genre - fighting, dangerous situations, powered humans, evil masterminds, henchmen, loyal friends and family, tragic back stories, coincidences, plot twists, secrets, snark, and laughs. TJ Klune is a master storyteller who has perfected the art of writing stories whose meaning and emotions stay with you long after you read the last word and whose main characters include ridiculous non-hetero characters who are also characters with such depth and so much heart that you want them to be your best friends. I am sorry to see the ending of the series. I will really miss the characters.

Good wrap up to the series
I've enjoyed this series as a whole, the third book is better than the second but not as good as the first. This review contains semi spoilers.I liked the conclusion though I wished Owen had a better end.I second what another reviewer said about the ominous chapter closers that petered out into nothing, causing unwarranted dread. And I was very happy there was a epilogue (I almost missed it, located after the acknowledgement) but I wished it was of Seth and Nick's wedding instead of telling us in a rushed fashion about their proposals)I also think there were way too many characters and I had trouble keeping track of all the parents. The sex scene was well done and felt really realistic and perfect for the characters. The thing I minded most was the PC overload. I felt that every single current PC catch phrase was hit multiple times. It felt like overkill, and for show, to the point I was wondering if it was genuine or parody, and it will really date the book in the future.

Fantastic!
It was a very good book. Writing was good,a little choppy at time. Love Dad Squad! Hilarious at times. All in all, a pleasant read.

An amazing conclusion to the series, which includes superheroes, queer pride, social justice, and found family. I laughed, I cried, I laughed some more! I love Nicky and his friends and want to protect him at all costs! I highly recommend these books!

Spectacular
Once again I'm happy to report TJ Klune is still kicking ass and taking names. Seriously, read all his books. The Extraordinaries series is so good. Nick is such a wonderful main character, Seth, Gibby, and Jazz are remarkable, and the Dad Squad is what parents everywhere should strive to be.It's a good one. Read it.

I haven't read the book yet
I haven't read the book yet. I was so hopeful, as the package had arrived in one piece. The whole book is however damaged. The cover is wrapped around it the wrong way (crooked). And there are tears in the cover of the book. There are also small stains on the book itself, I am very disappointed.
