From Wizarding World creator J.K. Rowling comes the Fantastic Beasts film series. These all-new magical adventures, set before the time of Harry Potter, follow Magizoologist Newt Scamander and his friends—witches Tina and Queenie Goldstein and No-Maj Jacob Kowalski. Harry Potter fans will also recognise familiar names, including beloved Hogwarts Professor Albus Dumbledore and powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald. Includes “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”, “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” and "Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore". Enjoyable (but not quite up to standard of the original)
Newt Scamander is a simply adorable character supported by an enchanting menagerie of fantastical beasts, and Eddie Redmayne was perfectly cast. ER had so many great scenes that it would be hard to single out any particular one. Colin Farrell made a menacing Graves and Dan Fogler was superb as Jacob. I also enjoyed Zoe Kravitz. Richard Coyle put in a solid performance as Aberforth Dumbledore, possibly better than Jude Law as the more famous brother. And whilst nobody except Johnny Depp could ever be Capt.Jack Sparrow, I wasn't convinced by him as Grindelwald. I hoped Mads Mikkelsen would be better but his casting didn't seem quite right either. As for the character of Queenie Goldstein - wt*?! I get that her role was pretty central to the storyline for Grindelwald (and Jacob) but she came across as a 'simpleton' and surely there are wizarding laws against random, constant mind-reading (or am I being a simpleton to expect such protections of privacy?). As for her ethics - lack of! - especially at the start of the second film, don't even go there! Overall the first film was IMO the best and the third was the weakest but I think the real problem is that these films were all written as films. Books allow scope to really flesh out characters and give them depth. Brilliant books can be adapted into brilliant films (a process that never seems possible in reverse). These films suffer from simply not having the same breadth & depth that you get in the original HP books. Although my head is full of HP knowledge, it doesn't compensate for weak characterization. The original HP set a very high bar. Also, despite that the screenplays were written by JK Rowling, there seemed to be more than a few instances of things happening which contradicted 'canon' in the HP-verse. Overall, a fairly enjoyable set of films but nowhere near as addictive as the original, one-and-only Harry Potter.
