The next installment in the New York Times #1 bestselling companion series to the Fox historical docudrama, Bill OโReillyโs Legends and Lies ; The Civil War is a pulse-quickening account of the deadliest war in American history. From the birth of the Republican Party to the Confederacyโs first convention, the Underground Railroad to the Emancipation Proclamation, the Battle of Gettysburg to the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, Bill OโReillyโs Legends and Lies: The Civil War reveals the amazing and often little known stories behind the battle lines of Americaโs bloodiest war and debunks the myths that surround its greatest figures, including Harriet Tubman, Abraham Lincoln, General Robert E. Lee, Frederick Douglass, Stonewall Jackson, John Singleton Mosby, Ulysses S. Grant, Jefferson Davis, John Wilkes Booth, William Tecumseh Sherman, and more. An epic struggle between the past and future, the Civil War sought to fulfill the promise that โall men are created equal.โ It freed an enslaved race, decimated a generation of young men, ushered in a new era of brutality in war, and created modern America. Featuring archival images, eyewitness accounts, and beautiful artwork that further brings the history to life, The Civil War is the action-packed and ultimate follow-up to the #1 bestsellers The Patriots and The Real West . Review: True facts - Remarkable information on these superstars. Great and fun reading. Review: Excellent Read - Enjoyed the entire book. Informative, well written, and unbiased account. Great book!
Another well written book which shows just how little history (honest history!) is being taught or even discussed. While I am an old duffer, I have always been interested in history when I was in high school in the late 1950's, aside from surfing, et al. There was so much NOT taught in those classes, especially about one of the most important events in this country's history. My only concern was the fear of using the "n" word and replacing it with "n_ _ _ _ r". I believe by spelling it out, it really emphasized the total hatred most southerners held for the slaves. I did know about the similar hatred held by many northerners, especially when the draft was being enforced and only whites were being sacrificed for "the rich mans war, and the poor mans fight." A great book and very eye-opening.. I do miss O'Reilly's TV show. Too bad he couldn't keep it zipped! .

Good Summary
Touched a lot of the .ost important topics of the Civil War without getting bogged down in the details. Even so, it provides some details that I hadn't heard before. Good, easy read in O'Reilly's entertaining style.

The Pro-Slavery Democrats Exposed
Our country is still so young. Soon to 250 years old. A very short time really. Yet we are in jeopardy. The Democrat party, the party of slavery before, during and after the Civil war claims to be the champion of Blacks and other people of color is a true falsehood. 850,000 people, mostly young men, not including the wounded fought and died to end slavery. What other country in the history of humankind, designed by our founding fathers that All Men and Women are created equal fought to establish that founding principle? Are we perfect in accomplishing that goal. No. Itโs not an easy task. And we are not perfect. But to say as the Democrats express over and over that we are a racist Country is wrong and does nothing to bring people together. In fact they are the racist, always dividing the people of this wonderful Country into believing there is something wrong with them. The truth is the American People despite some, which permeate all societies past and present, are a kind people most all of the 370 million of us.

Civil War Clarified
When we look at the history of our country, we realize that we are fallen human beings living in a fallen world as the HOLY SCRIPTURES testify. In our country (America) we forget that our forefathers had strong beliefs in our Creator and based our Constitution on HIS Word. As we look back we see those on both sides that hated slavery (which wasnโt like Biblical slavery) and those that promoted it. We forget that some hated it but fought for it because of where they lived. Itโs sinful that those who called upon the one TRUE GOD, didnโt do better proclaiming the TRUTH of the HOLY SCRIPTURES because in the first three chapters of Genesis we see that weโre all created in GODโs image. Itโs also a shame that they didnโt teach the truth of Acts 17:26, which plainly shows thereโs only one race, but different ethnicities. Maybe if the church (GODโs people) had proclaimed the truth, the slavery would have ended as in England and weโd had no war!

A Good Easy to Read History
Interesting and well written. The author keeps it at a high level, making it easier read than many histories of the Civil War period. Overall, a straight forward history presenting the accepted story of the civil war and an excellent resource if this is your first book on the Civil War. Because itโs easy to read, itโs perfect for the arm chair historian or those looking for an informative but casual read. The books description implies that it reveals untold truths. There are few controversial topics discussed. What is good is, that when sharing questionable information, he qualifies it with terms like โSupposedlyโ, as when: Lincoln said that if he found out which brand of whisky Grant drank, he would "send a barrel of it to all of his other commanders" to boost their success, or that Jefferson Davis supposedly โallocated substantial amounts of money to fundโ projects designed to terrorize the North, such as sending trunks filled with clothing from people who died of Yellow Fever to be distributed in New York City. Overall a good history.

A well written concise and accurate history of the Civil War. Really enjoyed the illustrations in the Maps which go along way to understanding the various battles and people involved. A piece of American history that is accurately pretrade and cleared up some of the myths and the lies that have circulated for years. A well written book of history that should be on everybody's bookshelf.
