Review: So far I have used it a lot and have had no trouble with it. Works great! - So far, so good. I use this a lot. I have had it for two months and have used it almost daily. Easy to clean; I mostly just rinse out the pull-out basket with hot water. Nothing sticks. The instructions were most likely written by someone who learned English as a second language so it was tricky to figure out, but it is darned easy to operate. 1. Press and hold the power button at the bottom of the display until it comes on. 2. Press the up and down arrows on the right of the display until you get the amount of cooking time desired. 3. Press the up and down arrows on the left of the display until you get the cooking temperature desired. 4. Press and release the power button at the bottom of the display and you will hear it come on. You can now just walk away and it will ding, ding, ding and quit cooking when the desired time limit is met. If you just leave it alone after it finishes cooking, the power will shut off automatically after 5 minutes or you can press and hold the power button at the bottom of the display and it will shut off. Depending on what you are cooking, you may wish to pull out the cooking drawer halfway through, shake the food around a bit, and slide the drawer back in. It will momentarily quit cooking while the drawer is out and will start up automatically when you reinsert the drawer.
Review: Rubber chicken and mushy fries... - I really wanted this to be something special. And, based on all the reviews, it should have been. However, in actuality, it was simply awful. The day it arrived we put it to the test with the good old American go to food... french fries. We followed the recipe book verbatim, soaking the cut potatoes for 10 mins., drying them, then using a small amount of oil and salt to coat them. Then, preheat the machine for 5 minutes to the recommended temp of 360 degrees. The pictures show gorgeous golden brown fries. What we got was wrinkled soggy pale fries. So, we left them in for a bit longer, about 10 more minutes ( the original time was 12-15 mins. according to the recipe ). Still the same. So we cranked the temp up to 380 degrees for another 10 minutes. Still the same but slightly burned/browned on the edges. We finally gave up. After doing some research on various sites including YouTube, it was apparent that the recipe book was bogus in regards to recommended temps. The consensus was that you need everything to cook at 400 degrees. Which, by the way, is as high as this machine goes. The next day, not to be discouraged with our first attempt, we made some fried chicken and tater tots as the next test. If it can't fry chicken and can't crisp some frozen tots then we're done with this gadget. The chicken was battered and the batter did 'crisp'. However, it had this rubbery sort of texture to it. The tater tots, however, just got hot and turned into mush balls. And, again, we gave these probably double the recommended time for cooking AND at 400 degrees. Which brings us to the next problem. I can deal with the fries or tots being done in 10-15 minutes as it states. But 25 minutes or more? And, they're still mushy? When we cooked the chicken plus the tots that took over an hour between the two. That's because there's only so much room in the basket ( 3 thighs filled it ), so we had to cook them separately. Therefore, the chicken had to sit for the 25 minutes we needed to turn the tots into mush... errrr, cook them. So, the end result of experiment #2, the chicken and tater tots dinner, was awful. Now, it's possible that this unit was somehow defective. But, there's no way to determine that since we don't know if it performed differently or sounds different than other units. When I first turned it on I was expecting the fan to sound rather 'robust', if you know what I mean. But, instead, it sounded like it was fluttering and started off in a low pitch then gradually got to what I would consider a more normal pitch. It reminded me of some of our older tower fans that have started to give out where the fan struggles to gain speed for the first couple of minutes. And, the fact we had to crank the temp to the max each time might be another indicator that there was a problem. Don't know for sure, though. We couldn't find anything video-wise that showed this specific unit 'in action'. Bottom line, if someone showed me that it really produces those golden brown fries and other delicious meat dishes based on the recommended times and temps then I might give this another shot. Like I said, I REALLY wanted this to work! We have two Insta-Pots and were looking for something to compliment those in regards to cooking specific items for dinners. But, this ain't it. 48 hours after arrival it was back in the box and returned for a refund.

### ⭐⭐⭐ 4 of 5 stars initially, based solely on the cookbook for now
*by R***N on January 2, 2018*

Update 1/21/2018: The attraction to this appliance was fried chicken but we still haven’t found that perfect fried chicken recipe for this air fryer. Although some of the recommended preparations like chicken tenders with seasoned Panko have turned out very good. The best thing I’ve cooked in this air fryer is corn dogs. The frozen ones come out perfect and I’m thinking frozen fast food like fish sticks and fish or chicken filets pre-battered would turn out nicely too. We are not seeing huge advantages over using an oven. In fact, the air dryer is really only suited for cooking for two or less because of its limited basket capacity, which is just big enough for four large chicken thighs arranged side by side. The biggest negatives to cooking this way are that it takes up already crowded space on the cabinet and tends to undercook meats so that extra time is always required. Also, cooking wit this appliance always results in adding two new large pieces to the dishwasher load, which precludes almost the entire lower level of the washer. We found mistakes in the manufacturer provided cookbook and so turned to a 500 recipe cookbook on Amazon. That one too had considerable quality issues that render it not fully trustworthy. For example, it sometimes list ingredients but never mentions them in the preparation section. Conclusion: I would not buy this appliance if I had it to do over again. For that reason, I dropped my star rating to three stars. ------------------------------------------------------ I like the idea of this air fry method and feel that it will become a winner in our household. But for now there have been growing pains and I don't feel confident to review the fryer itself so will postpone that for a later time. Just want to comment on the cookbook in this first part of my review. The cookbook, “Healthy Air Fryer” that is provided is lacking in some unfortunate ways. The beautiful color images of meals supposedly prepared from the recipe below each beautiful color image do not always seem to coincide with the recipe. For example, a recipe for “Coconut Milk Scones” is depicted by a slice of pie instead of a plate of scones. Another example: A recipe named “Country Chicken Tenders” is depicted in the image above the recipe as a winged breast. Other cookbooks for air fryers were created around other fryers but do provide lots of recipes and ideas not found in the included cookbook. As a newbie to this technology and this fryer I have some learning to do and experience to gain but am feeling pretty confident that we will grow to love it.
