Consider Jesus: Waves of Renewal in Christology

A brief survey
This is a brief and accessible book on Christology. I think it was written in the late 90s or so and Johnsonprobably was trying to be more "mainstream" after the more controversial She Who Is. The first half or sois about the life and ministry of Jesus, the spirituality of his followers in the Church, and the culminationin his death and resurrection. Then Johnson goes into the recent developments in Christology. Unsurprisingly, she favors a low ascending Christology as advocated by Rahner in 1951. Rahner's transcendental approach(using a philosophy of the human person emphasizing freedom and knowledge leading to God) is thenfollowed by Schillebeeckx and the narrative approach, which heavily uses recent biblical scholarshipand hermeneutics such as the perspective of liberation. Schillebeeckx wrote Jesus: An Experiment InChristology and Christ: The Experience of Christ As Lord, but also the earlier Christ the Sacrament ofthe Encounter With God, which used more traditional philosophy as its basis. Johnson is surprisinglybalanced, as the chapter on justice looks at John Paul's Redemptor Hominis as an example of descendingChristology and the American Bishops' pastoral letters on peace and economics as ascending Christology. Both are needed for the witness of the Church. Where the balance is lost, of course, is the chapter onfeminism, which resembles She Who Is and Quest For the Living God. Then there's liberation, whichfocuses on Sobrino, Segundo and L. Boff but surprisingly leaves out Gutierrez. The final chapter looksat theological pluralism, with the controversial views of John Hick and Paul Knitter (this was before RogerHaight's later work and the Jacques Dupuis controversy) and the ecology inspired by Pierre Teilhard deChardin. There's also a chapter on the problem of evil with Jurgen Moltmann, who advocates that Godsuffers in himself and not only in Christ's human nature, against the traditional doctrine of impassibility, and the response of Schillebeeckx which differs from Moltmann's approach. There's also a brief discussionof Rahner's theory of the anonymous Christian and the responses of von Balthasar and from the other end,Hans Kung.

An excellent review of Christology. The book is a few years old but very readable and still a good read.

Wonderful
This is a wonderful book by an inspired theologian. Hers is a nonfundamentalist approach to a subject often presented so poorly. If you want to truly deepen your personal relationship with Jesus this is the book to read. In fact, read every book by Elizabeth Johnson you can.

I read a library copy and wanted my own copy.
I had already read this book and wanted my own copy. This book is very clear on what lead to the Vatican II and the different "waves" of societal change. Thank you!
