In May 2008, Daryl Hall and John Oates took the stage at the legendary Troubadour for the first time since playing their earliest Los Angeles shows there 35 years before. The musicianship of this laidback, semi-acoustic concert is of the highest class. When the musicians have true substance and talents, they don't need to spice things up with special effects like pyrotechnics, fancy dance moves and revealing costumes. The 8-piece band rocked the Troubadour effortlessly, breezing through numbers without missing a beat. Daryl Hall's vocals has matured over the years and despite some comments that he doesn't sound as good as he did in the 80's, he is absolutely brilliant here. He possesses the best vocal range among male singers, in my humble opinion. The test of a singer's true ability is how good he/she sounds playing live - and Hall displays a masterclass here. The duo's stage presence is also a plus point; just a simple set-up but they brought the house down. They totally dominate. This is a high for every Hall & Oates fan, and if you are not a fan, get this DVD anyway. You will become a fan before the concert is even over. For all who cares about music in its purest form, this is it.

Music in its Purest Form

Truly Outstanding Performance & DVD
Please do NOT hesitate to purchase this outstanding video as EVERYTHING about it is so enjoyable. Hall and Oates have produced a truly remarkable repetoire of classic rock hits performed here in the intimate venue of this tiny club, and captured so wonderfully on this DVD. Its like being at a private performance at a party at Daryl's house, where everyone is just a few feet away from the musicians. I have watched it at least 40 times since purchasing it, showing it to many friends who absolutely had no idea that HALL & OATES have so many wonderful songs. Sadly one of the musicians, guitarist and bass player T-Bone Wolk passed away in 2010, but his talent lives on here in these songs. Everything about this DVD is outstanding, the songs, the performances, the recording, visuals, the whole package. Enjoy a magical evening and a wonderful, melodic and rhythmic walk down the memory lane of pop music.

Good stereo/HT system? Like concerts? Like the Teacups ride? This is for you!
Music quality is 5 stars. Detailed, good imaging, crowd noise is very subtle during tracks. I don't finding any particular instrument overpowering or unnatural. Although, it is a tad heavy on the kick drum which is not necessarily a bad thing. Video deserves no stars. After how distracting the camera changes during the first track were, I counted 116 camera switches during the second song, one with fewer camera switches than others, which I also timed at around 3:36 which makes an average of a camera change every 2 seconds. This is not an exaggeration. The constant switching actually prevents you from being immersed in the performance. The image quality is closer to DVD than what you would expect with blu-ray and a little shaky with focus issues at times. There are also sync issues which is probably due to so many camera changes. Sometimes the music matches up to the onscreen action and sometimes it is a little off. I believe the entire production budget was spent on the sound capture and mixing so they let some junior high students do the video for a class project. So buy it for the audio track, but don't intend on watching the video unless you take some Excedrin and/or Dramamine prior.

Acoustic Hall And Oates at the Troubadour
This is Hall and Oates at their best. All the hits are here but the performance is more intimate tha usual due to this being an acoustic set. The band includes their longtime bass player, T-Bone Wolk playing acoustic guitar along with Daryl and John. Hall and Oates always had a top notch band and this is no exception. For this performance there are a few songs never before played live from the album "Abondoned Lunchonette" in keeping with a return to the Troubadour, a venue they played early in their carrer. The quality of the Blu Ray is as exceptional as their performance. I rushed out to see them live in a small venue after seeing this disc for the first time. I was in the 3rd row and expected to duplicate this Blu Ray experience. The band was great as usual but the sound system left a lot to be desired. This Blu Ray sounds amazing and the sound of the live show was no match for this Blu Ray. If you're a long time fan or even just midly acquainted with Hall and Oates you will LOVE this disc. All the hits (plus a few extras) in an intimate setting, with an exceptional performance and unparalleled sound and visuals create one of the best live disc I've ever seen.

Really enjoyable "unplugged" sort of set!! w/bonus'
I just picked this up used at my local record store (yes, we have a couple where I live...envy me!) and I'm not sure why I did but boy am I glad! Its a very "unplugged" sort of treatment..which I favor over electronica anyway...and the songs really are not hidden behind too much production but the band is very very good. nearly 20 songs are played 2 hours (much better than all the 1 hour half shows on DVD these days) and Halls voice is still very very good..blue eyed soul. The bonus interviews are also a nice touch.. If you are a fan this should be a "buy it now"...if your not, I'm not sure why you are reading but this would be a good DVD to start with and you will find you know more of these songs than you thought you did! I believe Hall and Oates officially passed Simon & Garfunkel as the most popular duo of all time many many years ago...and all I mention that for is to note they did have a serious string of hits!

Torn between fantastic music and TERRIBLE video...
First things first: The performance on this disc is fantastic. Any H&O fan is going to love it. It's been thirty years, and their voices have mellowed, but not weakened. They always had impeccable harmonies, and that's still very much true. From an instrumental perspective, the acoustic nature of the performance allows for some really neat things, arrangement-wise. They've updated the arrangements of some of their classics with great results. Anyone who is familiar with Daryl Hall's monthly webcast, Live From Daryl's House ([...]) will be familiar with the format of the performance and the players. In fact, at times this concert feels more like an episode of LFDH with special guest John Oates. Daryl has always been the frontman and featured player, but John has such a beautiful, mellow voice, I found myself wishing they had featured him more often (check out the most recent episode of LFDH where John was a guest...his tracks are beautiful). After 30-something years, there's still quite a bit of magic left in these two. I just wish they would give us some new stuff. For as terrific as the music and performance are, whoever edited the video of the performance should be ashamed of themselves, tested for drugs, banned from ever using editing equipment again...take your pick. There are multiple instances during every song where the audio and video just DO NOT SYNC UP. These aren't artistic edits either...the video is just slightly ahead or behind the audio. It feels like there was no time track for them to use to match up the audio and video. The band would have been better served using the same crew that does the webcasts. If they did use the same crew, then they were waaaay off their game on this one. What makes it frustrating is that as fans, we've waited for ages for a new DVD release, and errors like these take away some of the lustre of the disc. Please don't get me wrong. I'm still very happy with this purchase. It's just that the video issues keep this from being perfect. Even a casual H&O fan is going to love this disc. This performance serves notice that they've still got "it", and hopefully this will lead to some fresh material from them in the future.

Acoustic bounty
This is truly an excellent DVD. I was surprised with this concert because it features a close up look at Hall and Oates ACOUSTIC guitar work. Smooth and well mixed, this show will not let you down. It is sometimes hard to capture the pleasing sound of wooden music on stage. But these two have it down. I was never a big fan of theirs for no particular reason until I listened to this. Now I will begin exploring their work deeply. Of all the music DVDs I own (quite a few) this one is my favorite!
