is it easy to remove and clean? I have tried other car ashtrays and don't want buy more

Yes. The top swings off and the bottom can be cleaned as easily as a glass.

How does the light on the ashtray works ?

There is a thing on the top you pull back and the lighter comes on...once it stops working you will have to charge it which it comes with a USB plug that you connect with a wall charger

Can I put this in my backpack while traveling will the lid stay closed and not smell up my clothes?

I haven’t tested it in such a condition but I would recommend a large plastic sealable bag with your used ashcan and a bandanna or piece of fabric and a day or two to see what happens. This is a sturdy product but I don’t think it was meant for travel.
