True renaissance family
It’s so important to know who these people are. Especially today what with Harry and Meghan talking BS about the royals. What galls me the most is Oprah saying they need to look at themselves. Holy cow Batman what a bunch of baloney she spews. And people read into that as gospel. Like these incredible people who devoted their lives to public service have some form of haughty racism. Oh hell no. Edwina Mountbatten had an affair (platonic?) with Nehru. This family loved south islanders. Loved Indians. Had the highest regard for brown and black prople. So for Meghan Markle to even hint at racism among the royals is an outright horrid lie. Loved the book bc it had pictures that being said I’ve read a dozen books on each of them and it’s always great to see them come alive in photos

Accurate and Reliable
A historic prospect of time when India gets independence from Britain and finds its own place in the intenational community. Pandit Nehru, India's first prime minister is accurately portraied as a visionary and statesman of world class. He and the Mount Battens forge a relationship that endures time and they become vistually relatives. It is an easy reading book and very enjoyable.

Fasinating Account of an Important Historical Event
This is an amazing first hand account of one of the most interesting and important times in history. To think that a young woman of only 17 years kept such details of day to day events at this point in the transfer of power from the British government to the people of India is amazing. Thanks to Pamela Hicks we get an up close and personal account of one of history's most interesting events. That the Mountbatten could accomplish this in such a short span of time was quite an accomplishment. The input of their granddaughter India is definitely a plus.

An introduction to Partition
The book was quick and easy to read, and touched upon the key events following the British decision to leave and oversee the partition of India and Pakistan. It was interesting to see a British view of the situation, especially as the Mountbattens were put in an incredibly difficult position. Definitely inspired me to read more on the subject.

An Inside Look at the Last Days of the British Raj in India
This book isn't profound, but it offers an inside look (through the diaries of Lord Mountabatten's seventeen year-old daughter) of the final days of the British Raj in India. The photos are ample and beautiful, as are the stories about Nehru, Gandhi, Lord and Lady M., and the author herself. You will enjoy this book tremendously

Very disappointing
I anxiously awaited Lady Pamela's book only to be very disappointed in the result. The photos are great as are many of the little memories. An 18 year old, fresh out of school probably isn't the best observer of any events. Her diary entries do add a lot to the personality of the players [for instance her beloved father nagged her to write her diary!] but overall this is a not a very useful book. Campbell-Johnson's "Mission with Mountbatten" is far more useful for a real account of the transfer of power.

Interesting book
I'm glad I ordered this book even tho it took over the amount of estimated shipping time to reach me. It is packed with photos and is an interesting memoir of an important time in world history. I've been to India many times and so was intrigued by the title of this book. I have already read a biography of Edwina Mountbatten. This book fill out the time frame so much more.

India I also remember
This book was interesting to someone like me who was born just as the sun set on the Indian Empire. What is disappointing is that having read the book Daughter of Empire by the same author I realise with dismay that there had been quite a bit of cut and paste in the later book from this book. There were some errors here and there which I found surprising. Obviously this book is written by a partial observer, namely the daughter of Mountbatten...history has shown however that a lot of what happened can be blamed on expediency and his high opinion of himself and that he was easily influenced. Had matters been allowed to take a little longer events would have changed the course of the outcome....Jinnah was dying but in secret. The world is now left with a failed state or very nearly one that has become the hunting ground for terrorism and zealotry and mischief which is exported globally and into India...consider the tragedy in Mumbai in November 2008. Things should have been done differently and history will not be kind to Mountbatten, Nehru or Jinnah...I grew up in post independent India and return there annually so am aware of the current situation. In my own trilogy I speak of modern India and the challenges she faces as a country and indeed the heartening progress.

A fascinating read
Having been lucky to have travelled to India for work many times, I have a huge warmth for the country and especially the people. What comes through here, is that the Mountbattens truly loved India & its people at a time when it would have been expected for them to do their jobs and act like the colonials they were meant to be. Emotional and fascinating in equal measure.

Great pictures but not many great stories to follow.
I bought this book thinking I would be able to get some insight into the last few years of the British rule in India. However, it must be remembered that the author was only a teenager and thus not privy to most of the meetings. Therefore, all we hear about is the personal lives of the Mountbattens. So if that is what you are looking for, the day to day lives of the Mountbattens, then it's a good book. Otherwise it is just a good collection of pictures.
