The wire gates are very well fitted into their holes, so only very fine sand could get in there, which would be unlikely to cause a freeze up. Light weight, so easy to operate and a high load rating. I use these to attach foam rafts to anchor lines at our cabins, so we can easily combine them, moove them, pull them out when needed. The wire gate is 10X easier to operate than the standard round gate, especially with wet hands. And all aluminum so no concern with corrosion. The connectors that came with my hammock screw together and had rusted shut. My children have different carabiners that came with their hammocks, but the edges are rough and snag on the lines. I plan to purchase more of these carabiners to upgrade my children's and for other odds and ends... like my keys!
