A Magnificent Vision of Mankind's True Nature & Destiny
Sri Aurobindo's 'Savitri' is a 23,000-line spiritual epic poem. Although it can be obscure in places, the more you read it the more it grows on you.Its author was a towering genius and one of modern India's greatest yogis whose collected works run to 30 large volumes. In them you will find, not mere theorizing, but the deepest and most penetrating analysis of the nature of reality and the world, of mind and spirit and the individual, an analysis that has never been surpassed since it was based upon what Aurobindo himself had actually seen and experienced in yogic vision. As he himself said:"Savitri is a record of a seeing, of an experience, which is not of the common kind, and it is often very far from what the general human mind sees or experiences," or, he might have added, has the slightest conception of.We learn from him that, as individuals, we are not nearly as simple as we think; both we and our world are complex phenomena in which innumerable spiritual powers and energies and agents, both divine and demonic, beneficent and malignant, battle for supremacy with the success of the former by no means being assured without our active cooperation. Here are two passages from 'Savitri' to give you a taste of Aurobindo's style. The first describes the outbreak of life force on earth in innumerable forms:"Alive and clad with trees and herbs and flowersEarth's great brown body smiled towards the skies,Azure replied to azure in the sea's laugh;New sentient creatures filled the unseen depths,Life's glory and swiftness ran in the beauty of beasts,Man dared and thought and met with his soul the world."The second passage seem to be describing a later world into which there has been a massive eruption of evil energies from a lower dimension, energies intent on our destruction, a world in fact very much like our own of today:"He saw a city of ancient IgnoranceFounded upon a soil that knew not Light. There each in his own darkness walked alone:Only they agreed to differ in Evil's paths,To live in their own way for their own selvesOr to enforce a common lie and wrong....In high professions wrapped self-will walked wideAnd licence stalked prating of order and right:There was no altar raised to Liberty;True freedom was abhorred and hunted down...."This dark vision, however, represents merely one facet of the poem. Its larger aim has been accurately summarized as "a vision of mankind's destiny within the universal evolution. [Aurobindo] sets forth the optimistic view that life on earth has a purpose, and he places our travail within the context of this purpose: to participate in the evolution of consciousness that represents the secret thread behind life on Earth."One alternative to the present edition is the Savitri First Edition published by CreateSpace in 2012. This might be preferred by some readers because its larger typeface and superior layout make for a more enjoyable reading experience.Savitri is by no means a simple poem and for anyone wishing to tackle it I can strongly recommend A. B. Purani's indispensable companion Sri Aurobindo's Savitri: An Approach and a Study , a really excellent work that provides a general introduction, an explanation of the legend and the symbols behind the poem, canto-by-canto summaries and much else besides.

Enlightening, intellectual, beautiful poetic teachings.
At a surface level:The level of English is very high, some old English, and the Oxford / Cambridge style of language, words not used today as much are in the late part of the 19th century and the earlier parts of the 20th century. The more you read the more powerful your vocabulary gets.More in depth and content:The strives of Savitri to overcome death for her loved one. One's experience as they travel the planes to enlightenment. It's the guidance to immortality of enlightenment. Provides deep descriptions in a poetic manner, the journey, the experience and the realm of the omnipotent.

For a very Select Spiritual Seeker
This book, this sacred tome, is NOT for everyone. If you are not familiar with Sri Aurobindo and his decades of spiritual Teachings, nothing about Savitri will necessarily make sense. This is a phenomenal text which Sri Aurobindo worked on for almost four decades and until the day he withdraw from his body. It is one of the most incredible books I have and I keep it by my nightstand. Just reading verses from it takes me into higher states of consciousness. But again, I don't recommend it to just anyone; only deep seekers of Truth.

Deeply moving
Aurobindo's writing is at it's peak of perfection in this monumental and deeply moving piece. It is the longest piece of poetry in the English language, written in the style used by Shakespeare in all his plays. The story begins at the beginning of creation and lays out in profound detail the human condition from man to God. The love story between Savitri and Satyavan is second to none: the devotion of Savitri to her husband mirrors the unconditional love of the Divine Mother for mankind. Read with your heart and be transformed into a divine human: your true destiny.
