When they're tilted, they are easily blown over in a breeze. So, we needed something to stabilize them.Some things are designed sensibly, and this Rhino BaseMate is one of them. In what ways is it an example of smart design? FIRST: Some similar (competing) items have to be "dropped over" the stem of the umbrella stand. But if you already have a patio umbrella set up as you want it, you don't want to have to remove the umbrella from the stand. The empty BaseMate can be slipped AROUND the an existing setup, the high-quality nylon belt can be snapped closed, and then the BaseMate can be filled. SECOND: it has a very large opening (velcro-sealed) for putting in whatever filler you want. Most folks may use sand. I chose to use pea pebbles (very small stones - you can buy a large bag at home improvement stores for about $3.50 - 2 bags will almost fill an 18" BaseMate). So:(1) Undo the belt clamp, slip the BaseMate around the stem of the stand, and snap the belt connectors together again. Note - snap the belt shut NOW - don't wait till you've filled the BaseMate (as I did the first time) because then it may be hard to close the belt.(2) Pull back the cover to reveal the opening. Use the included plastic scoop (very helpful - and good enough quality to keep for gardening) to add your sand or pea pebbles. Every so often, use your hand to push the material to the back of the BaseMate, to make sure that you'll be able to completely fill it. Yes, your hand may get a tad sandy / dirty. Who cares?(3) In my experience, 2 bags of pea pebbles (I bought the Vigoro brand) almost (but not quite) completely filled the BaseMate. We have three umbrellas (and 3 BaseMates) and 7 bags filled everything.(4) Close the velcro. Because you've been moving it around a bit to make sure you're filling it properly, there may be some sand / dust on the outside of the BaseMate. Wash it off with a damp rag.If you ever need to move your umbrella, the belt comes in handy again - you can undo the clamp, and use the built-in handle to pull the BaseMate off, and carry it to the new location; then you can move the umbrella + stand as desired (no need to remove the umbrella from the stand).We've had them on our umbrellas for a few weeks. We've had a few strong breezes, and the tops of the umbrellas sway a bit - but the stands are held, rock-solid, by the BaseMates. No more risk of tipping over - I think the umbrella poles will bend before that happens!Finally, it looks to me as though they will be very durable. I've been looking for a solution to lightweight umbrella bases for a long time. Even a little bit of wind seems to too the umbrellas, and in the Southwest they're essential. I found these on Amazon and, for the price they looked really good. After opening the package, I was not disappointed. They are made of thick, high quality fabric; very sturdy. I packed each with just under 50 pounds of play sand and out them on the bases. Now my umbrellas have 150#, not just 50. I'm going to see how it goes in the next few days, then update the review. BTW, the included scoop was a nice gesture that was well appreciated. Highly recommended! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ It really works! *by T***M on October 24, 2017* Today is a great test for this as we are having wind gusts from 20-40 mph. So far my umbrella is standing as sturdy as a statue! Also it looks very neat and tidy compared to just piling sand bags on the base. One tip I have is to fill the "points" of the bag first, before putting it on the umbrella...so you can hold the bag vertical and drop the sand down into the points. Then put the bag on the pole and fasten the belt.
