Mannix: The Complete Series

Delivers the entire series
I like this because it first hit broadcast TV when I was learning how to walk upright, or just after. I recall watching episodes when I was quite young, and absorbing all kinds of things for the first time. Seeing it now is like a reexamination of some of my earliest assumptions about the world. How people behave. Styles (clothing, hair, speech patterns...) Worth looking at. I'm not sure if I'll need to watch all seasons but I can if I want to. Oh - there were plenty of critiques of this after the initial airings. I think that may reveal as much about the reviewers as the material. Not perfect, but it is an iconic show from a time when things were in the middle of changing rapidly. Therefore, it may be worth watching for no other reason than that it provides a window into that culture. Oh, yes. It is somewhat unrealistic. Like most any show. No one who got hit on the head as often as Mannix would escape without some sort of cognitive decline. So... Yeah. ...might want to suspend a little disbelief.

Fantastic series
The absolute best PI series ever made. Mike Connors and Gail Fisher were a wonderful acting combo. Superb.

So far so good
Love Joe "Ironhead" Mannix LOL! I recently became reacquainted with Mannix when several dozen episodes were posted on Youtube - since deleted - in HD quality. I'm only partway thru the first season but so far the picture quality is excellent with no glitches or stutters. Each episode has a short intro by Mike Connors and each disc so far has a modest special feature - interview, etc. As to the content, well - Joe is your traditional male hero. Tough, honest, plain spoken, a bit of a playboy but respectful and protective of women - not todays' so called anti-hero who is almost universally a scumbag that you are supposed to like and identify with for some reason. I can only surmise that modern Hollywood has never met a decent human being in their entire lives and are sticking to the old maxim of write what you know. The stories themselves range from excellent to Eh? - just like in any series. The first season is a bit of an anomaly as Joe works for an outfit named Intertec but he's out with his own agency at the start of the second season. He's joined by his faithful secretary Peggy - played by the beautiful Gail Fisher - as well as a rotating roster of police contacts that include Robert Reed and Larry Linville. Why did I dub Joe "Ironhead"? Because in virtually every episode - and sometimes multiple times per episode - he is knocked unconscious by a blow to the head. A real human being would probably be a drooling vegetable due to brain damage after a typical seasons head trauma LOL! But seriously, if you want traditional, wholesome action adventure Mannix is a great show to start with.

simply the best
I've written reviews for seasons 4, 5, 6, and 7 of this series. I've also written extensively about this series on the "Mannix is Coming!" thread of the Home Theatre Forum. This series is special. It carries all sorts of labels, like "one of the most violent," that are simply absurd, especially by today's standards of the way violence is used in story as pure shock value -- not as something that fuels the hero's response We lose something important when we forget that violence in story goes back to fairy tales, and seems to be an essential part of working out some of the more fundamental stuff of life, like the importance of storied heroism in becoming a good individual. Cultures with violence in story tend to not be violent -- everything depends upon the way the violence fuels the story, the way the hero responds to it.This series does it right and like no other. It hits a sweet spot that has not been hit since it left the air.Joe Mannix is a classic hero. The more I study this, the more I believe he is one of the best constructed hero motifs to appear in story. He adds an element of vulnerability to his larger than life exploits. He gets hurt a lot. He isn't perfect. He keeps going. He fights the good fight. His heart is always in the right place. He is often described as the toughest PI on television. That is true. But, he also adds emotion to the mix.If that sounds good on paper, it is even better on screen. This is a series where the actor embodied the character as an alter ego (something observed at the time in numerous articles) and production qualities were at their very best -- from a production company that was known for not cutting corners during the golden age of television.I know of no other series where the main character was such an important part of each episode that there was hardly any supporting cast, the episodes included a mix of physical action, location shots, emotional response and close-ups, and the series lasted for so long -- eight full seasons. And the series was back in the top 20 when it was canceled in its final season -- still going strong. There will never be another Mannix. But, we would be better off if there was. Even better, just buy the DVDs.Even just a few more people out there inspired by the likes of Joe Mannix just might do us some good.

Missverständnis
Die Sammlung hat eine solide Qualität. Leider wurde bei mir der Eindruck erweckt, die Serie sei untertitelt. Aber die Staffeln 1-3 sind es nicht.

Mannix complete series 8 dvds
