Acetyl-L-carnitine is broken down in the blood to carnitine by plasma esterases. This is an efficient process, so the balance of acetyl-CoA and CoA and the balance of carnitine and acetyl-carnitine are maintained. In other words, taking carnitine is about the same as acetyl-carnitine except that the later causes weight loss -- to your wallet. The daily dose of carnitine that has been most commonly studied is about 5 grams, so to get the equivalent you'd have to take about 125,000 mg of acetyl-carnitine.

I wouldnt dare take it at night. It makes me sweat. I take it first thing in the morning or pre workout.
