Expensive but so is a speeding ticket
K band I noticed picks up alot of the signs that show your speed on the side of the road and lot of other false alerts. I turned K band down to lowest setting which is 30% I think which helps but there still is false alerts, I wouldn't turn K band off completely just so you're not caught lacking ever but whenever I hear KA band that's when I lock in cause usually its pretty good at picking it up. Definitely a good radar but definitely pricey as well, I bought it on sale for $650 but I would recommend it.

Best of the best (with one caveat)
Arguably the best detector on the market. The R8 is Uniden's top-of-the-line detector, it has very long range, has directional arrows, and has many customizations to help weed out false alerts. Bluetooth makes it easy to change settings via phone app. Be warned, the marketing material says this unit is not detectable by police using the Spectre I and IV radar detector detectors (RDDs), but real-world testing shows that the Spectre III and Elite RDDs can sometimes detect the R8 at close range. I'd go with the Escort Redline 360c or Valentine V1G2 if you need 100% stealth.

Good, Expensive
Lots of software adjustments, options for filtering, display colors, sounds etc. Like all detectors I guess, there are a lot of false K band triggers from other vehicle radar blind spot monitoring. The Uniden allows adding a few ranges of frequencies to not trigger the warnings, but there is some risk in doing that in excess and missing a real police radar event. I only have one complaint that would not be an issue for everyone. I mounted it to a sand filled base pad, designed to sit on the dash and using high strength Velcro, which I did with my Escort as well. The bottom of the Uniden housing is not flat, making it sit crooked to one side or the other when snapped onto the Velcro. I know, picky. I'll have to figure out a way allow for the angle.

Worth the price.
This review is for the UNIDEN R8 radar laser detector. I have only had it for a few days. I read reviews on it falling off the windshiled. Mine came with 2 mounts. One of the mounts does look flimsy. It looks like my expensive unit will fall off if i use it. It did come with another mount that looks like I would have trouble removing it. I highly doubt this mount will fall off. It has a button so it can clip on and off the mount with ease. I'll problaby buy another of those mounts for my other car. So I used it to go to work. This thing was going off the whole entire time. Some people say you can tweak it. I will look into that later. For now I never read the instructions I just threw it on the wind shield. On day 3 the device memorized the false alarms. It still lets you know there is a frequency being detected but it grayes it out and no sound. So I was cruising to work the thing was quiet. All of a sudden it goes off I slow down. Im mad there is nothing. I want to return it. Then all of a sudden I see a hidden P car trying to catch speeders. On that road the fine is 350. I would have gotten caught for sure. So I already see it as 350 off. Like I said I never read the manual it was plug and play. It learned what was fake and it alerted me to what was real. Another feature I like is it tells you where the radar is. It was beeping showing ahead I never saw anything I just wanted to return it. Then it said it was on my left side. I looked and OMG on my left side behinid the barrels was an SUV just waiting to catch me. I also like that it shows your speed in digital format. My car has a needle speedometer. I dont look at that anymore. I just look at the R8. Its right on and accurate. This thing is pricey. In its defence I just took it out of the box and plugged it in. Like things should be. So yes i'm willing to pay a premium for something that simply works out of the box. Reviews did say that the LCD screen dies out so I bought the insurance just in case. In comes with a thin sleeve to protect it as well as a sturdy case. For now its 5 stars. I bought a unit before from another brand that required conection to my phone access to my contacts and gps and the whole nine yards. My car looked like a cockpit of an F16 i could not see anything out of the windshield. Im not sure if this thing has an app. I dont want an app and you do not need one. Plug and play its that simple. Just be warned the thing is a cry baby for the first few days as it learns what is real and what isnt.

Lives up to the YOUTUBE reviews - but better.
The R8 is the 1st radar detector I've bought in about 10 years. The last being an Escort- that I believe was the first advertised undetectable radar detector. Driver STi, I think was the model name It was a GREAT detector for it's time, but over the years it became nearly unusable with all the false alarms it gave. Flash forward to this last week. It arrived on a Tuesday, it's Saturday morning now. 3 days of commuting to and from work in use. At the end of day 2 it had the GPS lockouts set. Perfectly. It's a 20 mile drive each way. About 4 miles are street traffic driving, the rest is interstate. Some YouTube reviews observed issues with the GPS lockouts feature. Maybe the firmware was updated for mine? IDK. But no issues with that whatsoever. Until I got the R8, I was - and still am- using the WAZE GPS navigation app.. WAZE is a fantastic app to notify drivers of road hazards and police presence in moderate to heavily trafficked streets and highways. But it's not that great in more remote areas or the wee morning hours for police alerts- or what if YOU are the 1at person to come across a freshly set radar trap? It's virtually useless then. That's where the R8 is worth it's weight 8n gold. UBIDEN engineered the R8 to have future Bluetooth connectivity to work with 3rd party app developers AND they are also working on a laser jammer add on device for the R8 as well.. Laser jammers aren't legal in all states. Do your homework on your area before you let that feature become a purchasing factor. In my area, X Band isn't used, so I turned that band off. I have it sweeping the entire K and Ka bands, including POP alerts. I keep it on the HIGHWAY mode. False alerts are very minimal and very shortlived. I suspect that the falses are coming from other cars using those bands for their own driver safety assistance features. There's filters for those band segments, but those alerts are weak and shortlived, I would rather have a hundred of those unobtrusive alerts than miss 1 real alert. I highly recommend watching the YouTube set up videos on the R8 and check out the recommended settings links that explain all the different settings use caaes to optimize your R8 experience. It really is a fantastic detector. I bought it through Amazon with the optional 3 year warranty. I don't expect problems with it, but you know the saying - Is rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Again, check out the YouTube reviews, they're spot on, but now with excellent GPS lockout performance, where that has apparently been an issue before. If you can afford it, get it. It's really all you need. Plug and play with a few minor tweaks, set it up once or twice and forget it. No app necessary.

Outstanding Performance and Customization.
This detector is high quality, has great performance and allows a lot of customization to dial it in best for your use case. My only gripe would be the mute memory stopped working properly for my normal commute after I took a 1,000 mile road trip. This is a known issue however, that should get fixed via software update, which you have to do manually by plugging it into your computer. However, after deleting the mute memory in the spots where it wasn’t working and re-adding them, it’s working well again. I especially like that there’s a 3rd party R8 companion app you can add to you smartphone for only $10 so you can more easily change settings from your phone. The app can also add more advanced false alert filtering and “Spot Locks” which are like Auto Mute Memory locations but overcome the memory glitch in the detector because they’re managed by the app. If you turn the volume of the detector off and run audio through the app, then most audio alerts should he real threats instead of the other way around, which keeps you sensitized to chirps. The only thing this detector want do much for is Laser detectors because by the time that narrow beam hits you it’s too late. The best protection for laser is a jammer. The best on the market is the ALP laser jammer and the Uniden R9 laser jammer, but the latter requires the Uniden R9 detector system instead of the R8. If you don’t want to shell out up to $2k for a legit laser jammer, then just keep a car or two in front of you. If the laser is far enough away, the beam will mostly hit them but can spread enough for you detector to detect.

Excellent Detector
Hadnt owned a radar detector in decades. Read something about detectors and was curious what was on the market these days. Looked like the Uniden R8 and the Escort Max 360 were the top choices. Hit youtube and did some research. Decided on the R8. Pretty staggering price, because it always seemed like it takes about $300-350 dollars to get out of a typical speeding ticket, and you logic out how a $300 detector will pay for itself on the 1st time it alerts you and saves you. Well, this one will have to save you a couple times to justify the $700 price tag. Have had it for a couple months now. The main redeeming part on this expensive purchase is Ka band detection. It is beyond good. The range of pickup is exceptional. They stole the idea of arrow display to tell you which way the radar is coming from, from the original Valentine One detector.....but it is essential in helping fine tune your conclusion of which way the threat is coming from. X and K band are probably only good if you are traveling through Mayberry, where older technology radar guns are probably still in existence. Laser is worthless. It just confirms a ticket for you. Ive actually been lasered once with this detector. But, the cop had his Ka signal going in the background, so it tipped me off to pay attention that a cop was in the immediate area and make sure my speed was in line, and THEN I got hit with laser. If that Ka signal wasnt going in his car, thier laser would have gotten me. So, once again, laser detection is worthless, its too late if they laser you. Its all about the Ka band. As far as the look, it is chunky. But in a great way. The display window is large and angled towards the driver. I literally like it more and more everyday I use it. All the displays are understandable and easy to quickly reference with your eyes. I can't imagine the Escort 360 could be better than this. Also, I saw people complain that for this price, the shell of the unit should be metal, and not plastic for the price you pay, and it made it feel "cheap". I never felt like the plastic was a deal breaker. Looks nice, feels fine. Not an issue for me. The suction cup mounting bracket has been a problem. Been dealing with high heat days and then a cooler night and have come out many a morning to leave and the mount is lying on the floor. The last thing you want is a $700 radar detector falling (maybe the plastic could be a problem?). But i must have gotten a good seal recently, because it hasnt fallen in weeks. Another VERY important thing, my STRONG advice, RUN THE WAZE APP ON YOUR PHONE IN COMBO WITH THIS DETECTOR. They work extrenely well together. When one has a weakness moment, the other covers it. These 2 together are formiddable! And Waze is FREE. So, I would highly recommend this detector. Hope this helps in your decision☺️
