Beka 20 cm 3 litre saucepan (not so stainless)
I have used this pan twice since receiving it last week. It is a very well made saucepan which looks great on the stove. The handle is slim and elegant. It heats quickly and evenly, as one might expect with tri ply steel. The Beka logo is printed prominently on the top of the handle but is not large enough to be offensive. The only problem I have had with it is the white stains that are very visible on the inside of the pan after using it on both occasions. I was careful not to put salt into the pan until the water was boiling on its first use, and boiled water without salt on the second use. New stains appeared on both occasions when the pan was emptied out. I have not been able to remove them with normal scrubbing and do not want to try any abrasive cleaners or pads. This has never happened with my old stainless steel pots. I live in an area where the water has lime / calcium in it, so that may be an issue.. I would have given 5 stars if there had not been this problem. I also have bought the 20 cm saucier which is a beautiful pan, with a perfect shape for sauce making and is now my favourite pan. So far, neither the saucier nor the 14cm pan that I bought exhibit this problem with the staining on the inside. I will wait a while longer before contacting the manufacturers and update this review later..... UPDATE....today I used the pan and after washing it out I am left with the base of the pan covered in rainbow coloured blotches which cannot be removed with warm water, soap and elbow grease. Interestingly, the white spots of yesterday have disappeared. There must be some issue with the quality of the steel in the inner lining to make it so prone to staining easily, as it seems to be reacting to the food as it is cooking!... These stains are not acceptable to me, so I will be returning this. As I stated above, this has never happened to any of my old SS pans which I now will be returning to.. a pity, as these are fine pans otherwise. Further update: I have since discovered that the white spots are calcium-related and can be removed by boiling a little white vinegar or lemon juice in the pan ( probably other acids like wine or tomatoes would help also ). Other proprietary solutions like Beekeepers Friend (a stainless steel polish) have been suggested, but I would rather not use it on the inside of the pan.The rainbow blotches are seemingly a result of 1) heating the pan while empty, 2) heating with dry food in it or 3) a machine oil residue from the manufacturing process. 4) Bluish rings can also occur due to starch contained in some foods such as pasta and rice. In either case, one is recommended to cook liquid food for the first few uses and the staining should disappear.I don't know if these recommendations apply to the Beka cookware but it would have helped me to know this so I could have persevered with the pan rather than return it.
