However, you can program another button to act as the cable box on/off command. If your mother does not or rarely uses the 'Mute' button then you could teach the remote the command of turning the cable box on and off. This would be the only possible way of doing it for the time being. I don't remember how to hide channels on Dish, but on DirecTV, you create a Favorites list of the channels you want to see, and then you make your favorites list active.
