NOT Part of a Series
This isn't review about the book itself (which I love), but rather the erroneous information listed after the book title, "(The Ashes Book 6)". Someone at Amazon confused Woodiwiss's book Ashes in the Wind, which is a standalone novel, with the book "Wind in the Ashes" by William W Johnstone. Trying to find a way to send this feedback to Amazon directly is nigh onto impossible.

My most favorite book of all time
Have read this book more than half dozen times. Love the romance amidst the civil war.The first half is my favorite and by far better than the second part. The trials and tribulations of the time for our nation are a fascinating part of our history and are treated with historical accuracy by KW.The second part becomes a bit far fetched by bringing Cole and Alaina's enemies full circle from war torn Louisiana to Minnesota with a dubious family connection and a rather Gothic plotline. Nevertheless I love it and highly recommend this book to lovers of civil war stories. You will love Cole and Alaina.

5 star part 1!
Well written plot dialogue romantic tension part 1 Confederate Heroine disguised as boy janitor at Union hospital saves the life of drunken Union hero physician who is mugged & thrown in River She recues him from the river, takes him home , where he seduces her & is smitten but hero is tricked into marriage by her evil cousin who pretends she is the one he slept with, he is too drunk to remember Much adventure & fun dialogue in first part Worth reading!Second part H&h are married but she won't consummated marriage due to a misunderstanding which is a frustrating plot ploy so stopped reading at 75% 'The flame & the flower' was the same , ruined the story 'the wolf & the dove ' my favorite wasn't like this , perfect romance!

Ashes in The Wind - historical romance novel well-written
I have read all of Kathleen Woodiwiss's romance novels. While all are well-written with great historical settings, Ashes in the Wind remains my favorite because of the story. I have read it about 15 times and enjoy it each time. The characters are complex and very likable, and the scenarios are mostly believable, unlike so many "bodice-ripper" style romance novels. It is set during the American Civil War, the most recent time-period for any of her novels settings. The social customs and motivations of the characters are more familiar than settings further back in time or in other countries. K.E.W. has a definite pattern to her style of story telling, and she delivers the action, dialogue and the historical backdrop that makes it all come together. Very well written. If you like subtlety in a romance rather than 2-steps-shy-of-porn, you will like Kathleen Woodiwiss. I wish she was still alive to write more such novels.

Long and epic
If you're interested in reading a looooong historical novel with drawn-out "will they?" or "won't they?" romantic drama, then this one is for you. I personally found it annoying how long it was, how one-dimensional the villain was, and how painfully slowly the main characters realized their feelings for the other. This book seemed dated in that regard and not because it was set in the Civil War.What I did like: the time period and the attention to detail. The heroine's disguises and hatred of the Yankees. I also enjoyed Cole's struggles post-injury and how genuine his mental health journey seemed to be.All in all, a B- read for me.

My Favorite Historical Romance
I recently purchased a Kindle version of Ashes in the Wind because my original trade paperback copy is slowly falling apart. I want to keep that 1st edition copy as part of my collection and also out of deep respect and admiration of Mrs. Kathleen Woodiwiss's remarkable writing talent.I became an immediate fan of Mrs. Woodiwiss back in the '70's when she first began to wow the world with her prose. I have read all of her books. I own a copy of most of them but Ashes in the Wind remains my all time favorite of all historical romance novels.Written with whit and emotion, the story surrounds a young sourthern girl's love for a Union soldier; the attaction they both try to hide but when exposed become thrust into a life filled with secrets and mistrust that nearly tears them apart, as well as threatens both of their lives. Ashes in the Wind remains one those stories a person never forgets and returns to read time and again. I certainly have.December 2012:Of all the books I have read over the years, Ashes in the Wind remains my most favorite of all time. It cannot be compared. I still have that original paperback copy...so worn now the pages are beginning to fall out...and I cannot say how many times I've read this book. Now I vow to get an e-copy so I can read it againMarch 8, 2013 I got that e-book copy the day my first grandchild was born...a healthy boy! So now I have two favorite reasons to remember this dateupdate: MArch 14, 2014I have read Ashes in the Wind at least 3...4 times but it has been several years since the last time I read it. This time I found myself studying the book as I read. Only Mrs. Woodiwiss could write a story using words likened to Shakespeare in such a way the entire text appears as a modern day genre. Her stories, her descriptions not only of landscapes, but scenes and emotions are so real one feels as if they are actually participating in the entire story as if it was happening in real life. Even though I have read this book time and again I was once again drawn into Alaina's world, feeling her fear, her determination, her love for Cole so that I found myself rereading pages...sometimes whole chapters to make certain I had not missed or overlooked anything. So I declare Ashes in the Wind, once again and for always my most favorite historical novel. It takes a great deal of talent to have something you wrote more than 30 years ago continue to mesmerize readers (especially those who have read your work before) read your story as if it was new and fresh and every bit as entertaining as it was when it was first published.

Sorry - not impressed.
I took a chance on the reviews that this book received by others, but if this is KEW's finest, then I dread to see what her other books are like! The story was long and eventful and that is the only reason I didn't cast the book aside in disgust. Cole's character seemed promising in the first part of the book, and Alaina as Al was much better as a character than Alaina, the lady was in the second book. I cringed with the number of times the characters behaved like such drama queens that I nearly put the book down. Some scenes and especially the way the characters spoke just did not seem right. KEW used words like "nattily" etc that reminded me of the jargon used in Georgette Heyer's novels. In fact, the way Cole spoke sometimes, just didn't fit the Civil War scenario, but fit more in a regency setting. This book was too jumbled up for me - definitely won't be keeping this one.
