can you use these passively with 3.5 mm audio cable or must they be powered

While I did have a charged batter, playing audio over the 3.5mm jack did not require me to turn on the headset. I don't know if it would work the same way if the battery was flat however.

Yes, but you have to make sure Noise Cancelling is turned on using the app first. I.e. it remembers the last setting used (noise cancelling or ambient sound) and I'm not sure you can change it without connecting the app, which won't connect when the 3.5mm jack is inserted.

In terms of call quality, how well do the technics eah-a800 do when it comes to rejecting noise other than your voice? others pick up everything :(
