Not only not "user friendly", I consider it "user angry"
I cannot figure it out. The software is beyond difficult to figure out. I hired a gentleman who runs an IT company whose bread and butter business is to back up servers for medical service providers. He was here for about two hours, and he could not configure it.I bought it because it was purported to backup my images and videos from our family's phones. After about 3 days of it doing this as instructed, it stopped. For over a year now it has not worked. Now my computer won't even register the NAS on my network. I thought I could retire it to an external hard drive that at least stores data when I send it (rather than my original intention of being automatic). My computer cannot find it if is has been asleep for any length of time.My money was completely wasted.

1) Performance is very poor. 2) Only one device can be actively pushing ...
Buffalo 520 4tI wasn't expecting much, and boy they sure did not deliver. This thing is a piece of junk, and support is well amateur at best. After a couple of weeks of usage, here is what I have found so far.1) Performance is very poor. The max speed you can get out of it for throughput is 10mg. With a 1G network that seems crazy.2) Only one device can be actively pushing large files to it at a time.3) While it does indeed support DNLA, clients trying to access it, don’t get a full listing all the music (I have modest list of MP3s at 65k).4) While it does have a mechanism to back it up, there is no mechanism to rotate backups.5) Files deleted from the attached USB device must be manually deleted off it it. Each folder deleted (about 300G, takes 5 days to delete.)6) Once directories have been deleted from the USB device, they then must be deleted from the recycle bin on the device itself (even with the recycle bin turned completely off for all folders).6) It’s going on a week; manually deleting backups are still running from a week ago.I contacted support about the issues with backing up the device and they confirmed it has no way of maintaining a current backup and that deleting backups is problematic. Seems strange that you would put a product out there with such software defects.I will say, this the UI for managing it is nice and easy to work with. However, it is very simple not much control over the device.I wonder if I can send this back, its not worth any price.

therefore i could not feel completely satisfied with the contents of the package or the confidence ...
linkstation delivered in a timely manner, The contents of the package was incomplete (no power cord, CD or manual). the linkstation functions as expected but was not set to factory defaults which leaves the question of if it was used and sold as new. therefore i could not feel completely satisfied with the contents of the package or the confidence that this was a new linkstation.

Works great
We've been using these for a while now and have not had many issues as this seems to be a lot better than the WD My Books we've used in the past. for the price its is a great low cost backup solution NAS.

Awful Instructions ...at least for a Mac
Unfortunately, this is not as simple to set up with a Mac as the description would have you believe. I have found the online and .pdf instruction to be dated and inaccurate and after several hours of trying to interpret what they say I should do, gave up until I can call tech support tomorrow. Just as an FYI, if you plan to use this with Apple devices, be prepared to put some time in to get it set up right. Disappointed to say the least.

Piece of junk with amature-hour support from Buffalo USA
This is an appalling NAS that appears to have been hastily thrown together and released without much consideration for the end user. It has a very clunky web interface that offers no email notifications of Raid Array health or back-up status (you have to log-in to the web interface and pull up a log to see if it has started or finished any back-ups). I have tried FOUR different external USB HDD units to back-up to and every one resulted in the NAS crashing and going off-line, requiring a power cycle to recover. The USA "support" team suggested my back-up drives were faulty. That's right all four of them - two brand new, two others I am currently using quite happily elsewhere - two powered from the USB cable two with external power adaptors, three of them different models from two different manufacturers, but Buffalo thinks all four of THOSE are faulty and not the Buffalo drive. Even after I pointed out it only started failing when they went from NAS f/w 4.13 to 4.30. They also told me they don't support rolling back firmware.Take my advice - avoid this lemon of a product at all costs unless you want to spend HOURS arguing with their tech support staff.[UPDATE]: Will it only took a couple of months more before the unit failed (not the disks mind you - though one of those did fail earlier) but a firmware update bricked it such that the support person has just told me "At this point moving forward can lead to data loss". Great. I'm dumping this brand now - I just don't have the time for this constant maintenance.

Always having Connectivity Problems
I took a chance on this drive even though it had less than stellar reviews and I do have to say it deserves the bad reviews. I have found it to be a very unreliable backup solution. The drive always disconnects, missing critical data backup. Recentally an new problem started with a drive connected to one of the USB ports it never connects. Sorry to say I would not buy another one of theses drives. The customer support is very slow and the people I worked with so far seem less than knowledgeable. Sorry buffalo but I do not think I will be buying any more of your products. :(
