Lets start with a conversation about mercury type switches that relate. How many old houses have you seen with mercury thermostats from the 1960's still working. Mercury thermostats don't go bad because they are basically a simple liquid metal switch. Mercury (liquid metal) flows inside a closed area to make the electrical connection between two electrical connections. Usually the only reason people changed the old mercury thermostats was to update to a programable digital type. Hiland THP-ATS mercury switches have zero mechanical parts. Nothing mechanical to break with the Hiland THP-ATS. So with that, if you want to KEEP BUYING switches that are mechanical , buy the ball bearing inside/ arm that gets bent/ mechanical failure prone micro~switch~~ Hiland THP-ATM. I opted to go with the 2 mercury liquid switch's (Hiland THP-ATS) that have ZERO mechanical parts to fail. I fabricated a small sheet metal piece to hold them. See pics. The rivets were only spread enough to hold the switches. I did not pull on the rivet center pin til it broke off, in fear the hole would break off the switch. You only have to spread the rivet till it holds the switch. CUT off the rivet pull pin with side cutters or a die grinder. Level switches when you attach the new fabricated switch holder. This must be done to work properly. I have kids so I tested the duel heater with the new mercury safety switches (Hiland THP-ATS type) I tilted the heater slightly as if it was bumped/ knocked over ~~~instant off !! I no longer have to tape the gas buttons in for my $70 plus harbor freight (prob$90 now) duel heater to work and the knock over safety feature is back. Wife used it during the trunk or treat for kids at church outside. She was warm and loved it. It now Works great!!! Fix yours the exact same way you will love it. This project should be a fix it once and be done. Buy the Hiland THP-ATS mercury switches x2 for the duel heater. The Hiland THP-ATS are currently $6.00 cheaper per switch (saved $12.00 in my pocket) with no mechanically prone parts to break. Remember mercury switches have been proven for YEARS to be a more reliable. Advice from a 51 year old certified skilled trades guy. I typed all this out to help someone, hopefully you. If your worried about the environment with these containing mercury don't break the switch, its still inside. Wish I had taken a photo of the underneath of the switch to show you the mercury holding area is baby tiny. The bottom looks to be metal sealed so what mercury is in the switch, really is a very small dinky amount. Don't sweat it. The switches look big in photo's but really are way smaller than you would think. When you get the Hiland THP-ATS you ordered you will be like these really are little. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ It Works! *by J***. on August 15, 2024* I tested this when my patio heater was upright and when tilted. When upright it went on, and when tilted beyond about 45 degrees it switched the gas off and thus stopped the flame. That's what it is supposed to do, so what more could I ask. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Worked perfectly *by D***K on March 28, 2024* 22 year old patio heater and replacement parts are still available.
