The fact is that song birds such as Cardinals, tufted titmouse, chickadees and nut- hatches, need fats and proteins to live. They get this from nutmeats such as sunflower seed, safflower seed, and even peanuts. Milo is a grain and a byproduct from the agricultural feed industry. The tall grass you see under your feeder is what is used in animal feed. Once this grass is harvested there are tons of seed left over. The bird feed industry will then buy this grain, which is very heavy, and add it to the more expensive oil seed in your birdseed bag, greatly adding to their profit margin. People don't know any better, to them it just looks like birdseed. If you watch a bird feeder with a mix in it you will almost always see birds throwing seed on the ground. They do this because they can see there is oil seed in the mix so they fling it until the oil seeds come to the front so they can eat it. Then, because not much else eats the grains, it will sit on the ground and grow into weeds and your feeder. It's very rare to see sunflowers growing under a birdfeeder because they get eaten before they germinate. Grains are different. Ironically, there are birds that are parasites to our native songbirds such as starlings and the European house sparrow. These birds actually wreaking havoc on our native population. They wil eat anything including garbage, but are greatly attracted to the grains thrown out on the ground at your birdfeeder. Essentially you are attracting the parasite birds to your yard by providing Milo for them. All you need as a minimum is a decent quality of sunflower seed. If you want to go further, pick up a blend that has safflower and peanuts as well and even a little millet is good - but it should be the last ingredient on the ingredient list. You might also need a squirrel proof feeder.
