Gold and Iron: Bismark, Bleichroder, and the Building of the German Empire

German History 19th century
This book by the German Jewish historian, Fritz Stern, created a stir when it was first published in the 1970s. I purchased my own copy then and I have referred to it again and again in the intervening years. It gave me a great foundation to understanding of German 19th century history as a prelude to 20th century German history, as well as the vital role that finance and capital played in the rise of Prussia and of the Bismarck family in that era. To select one of many fascinating chapters, the one on Bleichroder's role behind the scenes after the Franco Prussian war is particularly memorable. Many history books date as new information comes to light, but Gold and Iron is as relevant today as when it was published nearly 40 years ago. My latest purchase is to give as a birthday present.

How Germany financed its 19th century growth
An interesting account of an aspect of German 19th century history. However the book is rather difficult to read as it is written in a somewhat turgid style indicative of its academic author. Not a bedside read.

Interesting!!
This is by far the best story of this important time in German history that I have read!It is actually a biofgraphy of both, Bleichroeder and Bismarck, their relationship, and a story of the antisemitism prevalent at the time.As a layman, I cannot judge the objective truth of the story told, but it is amazing! The book is easy to read, never boring! For anyone interested in this imprtant segment of German history, this is a great book to read. The only draw back for me was a technical one: the print is very small, you need good eyes and/or good light and good glasses!

German history from the perspective of a great historian
A really impressive book but since I have only recently started reading it I can't offer an overall critique of the content. The book arrived promptly and in the condition described by the vendor. These considerations prompt me to recommend this bookseller to other prospective buyers.
