Lots & Lots of Jets and Planes 3 Disc Set

Whether or not this is a good thing depends on who you are ;)My partner, for one, was thrilled to discover the old commercial for this 3 disc set on Reddit, so I got it for him as a surprise (I was both surprised & glad to find it available on Amazon).Although this series appears to be made with kids in mind, he’s been enjoying them as thoroughly at age 31 as he would’ve at 7.Apart from the original aircraft-themed songs scattered throughout, it doesn’t feel condescending or dumbed-down at all like a lot of media geared toward kiddos, which we both appreciated.He described the series very much like attending “an air show, except less loud and in worse resolution,” unironically declaring it “the purest form of filmmaking,” “peak cinema,” “even better than Top Gun,” and “too special to binge-watch” (…we watched the three discs in three days instead of all three in one sitting).He also noted that “there’s no false advertising; it really does have ‘Spectacular Non-Stop Aviation Action.’” (There are even a few clips with helicopter & boat cameos). His favorite is disc three, which primarily focuses on passenger jets.His rating is a confident 17/10, and I am not one to argue with pure joy…!As someone whose interest in aircraft is pretty limited to enjoying the thrill of air shows, museums, and overall “thinking they’re pretty cool,” I personally found the films to be a little hokey but overall entertaining & VERY nostalgia-inducing. Disc one’s instrumental music is especially reminiscent of my late-90’s/Y2K childhood.We both found the bonus footage to be interesting, educational, and well-done. Volume 1 has a beautiful-colorized mid 20th century interview/“day-in-the-life” of an experienced pilot, while Volume 2’s covers experimental NASA aircraft, and some archival footage of early jet air travel.The best part for me by a long shot, though, was seeing how much the person I love enjoyed them, which made it extra fun to watch. So for me it’s a 10/10 — will undoubtedly watch again.We’d highly recommend this disc set if you: 1) are an adult on the autism spectrum whose special interest is airplanes, 2) are in the market for a gift for an adult on the autism spectrum whose special interest is airplanes, 3) are really, really into airplanes, 4) want to get a kid really, really into airplanes, or 4) are a nostalgic person who wants background footage and/or music that slaps (in which case, disc one is the way to go).Have fun! 🛩️
