Ordinary Affects

Bought this Book for a Class, but Found it Intriguing
I bought Kathleen Stewart's text as a requirement for a social rhetoric class I was taking, but found the book's unusual style and the content very intriguing. I'd recommend picking it up, particularly if the subject of rhetoric is of interest to you - it's an easy read, very accessible and the small stories that make up a majority of the text are interesting to consider.

Gorgeous writing. Kathleen Stewart provides a remarkable glimpse into average America, infusing her stories with a sense of fantasy and surrealism.

Stewart captures the ordinary in creative yet familiar means and discusses affect theory in a way that makes sense! I constantly think back on this book ever since I read it this summer.

One of my favorite books...
I bought this as a text for one of my graduate school classes, and it's the dessert that I got to reward myself with after finishing my veggies for dinner.

Meh.
I had to read this for an Anthropology class - I loved the class but I hated this book. After going over it in class I understand what the author was trying to accomplish but for me personally, this was torture to read. It felt pointless and filled with unnecessary jargon which the author did not bother to define.

AWESOME
Found it the cheapest on here and even though it is used, it appeared fairly new. No markings on it except the used sticker. Needed it for my American Studies class.

A beautifully descriptive journey of everyday happenings in everyday lives
I absolutely love Kathleen Stewarts Ordinary Affects, I tend to read it in the summer when I'm sat out chilling in the sun. It's a beautiful read, about everyday happenings in everyday life. I am unsure what people are expecting when they give one star, maybe they didn't understand it. I am using her work in my PhD thesis along with Brian Massumi's work on affect. Her work really helped me understand affect so it's worth the money.

... is some insight here but it is lost in tedious pretentious drivel
There is some insight here but it is lost in tedious pretentious drivel. The author clearly fancies herself as a writer but I thought the prose was hackneyed and twee. The praise lavished on this book is quite ridiculous and it seems clear to me that there is something of an emperor's clothes phenomena going on here.

profound, anecdotal, yet scientifically valuable. This book takes Geertz's proclamation of thick description literally.
