Love it!
Purchased the 12 inch soil sampler and it works wonderfully, even in my clay soil. As a beginning, hobby gardener, I was intimidated by the cost of the larger sizes and couldn't justify them. But this 12 inch sampler was very affordable and perfect for me. Quality, sturdy build and super easy to use. My family and friends are borrowing it to do their own sampling.

Worth the price. Amazingly useful tool for any gardener or lawn aficionado.
When first looking at this probe, I’ll be honest I balked at the price. Half a C note for a piece of metal I might use twice a year?! Crazy! After looking at other soil probes in stores and reading reviews here on Amazon (they weren’t good for most of the cheap ones) I begrudgingly purchased this one as it seemed like the best quality one at a price not approaching $100. I’m very glad I did. The quality of this tool is top notch. All the edges are smooth, there is no flex when you push it into even the driest of soil, and it has a nice large sample collection area. Does it have all the features of the AMS model? No. But for half the price and my uses it’s perfect. Regarding uses. When I ordered this I was only thinking of taking soil samples for testing and looking at grass root growth but this can be used for SO much more then that. I use it regularly for checking the soil moisture, especially with sprinkler systems, finding sprinkler lines (I do a fair bit of sprinkler work) looking at soil layers and composition, finding sprinkler leaks, probing for trenching a cable, and lots more. The ability to see all the layers of soil is fantastic and the tool does a great job going through even tough, bone dry, soil. Bottom line this is a very well made, sturdy tool that has way more uses then you might think at first. As someone who does a lot of landscape work both lighting and irrigation, and is a lawn & garden nut, I should have purchased this tool a LONG time ago. Yes the price is high for “just a probe” but compared to what they sell basic steel probe rods for at the big box store, it’s worth it.

Does what it’s supposed to
This item functioned exactly as expected. The beveled cutting edge sliced fairly easily through my soil and the core sample was easy to extract through the side opening. It appears to be well made and the handle was comfortable as it was pushed into the soil. I collected samples a couple of days after it had rained and my soil is not generally hard packed. It does contain some clay in an otherwise loamy soil. I do think it is slightly overpriced for what it is but I wouldn’t hesitate to buy it again because it worked well for me.

Worked perfectly
I took over 10 samples 6" deep easily by pushing the 12" soil sampler into the ground, twisting it around and pulling it out. The sample came out into my collection bucket by turning the sampler with the soil slot down and pushing a gloved finger through the hole in the bottom of the sampler. I thought I would need one of the deeper samples but I did not since A&M requests the top 6 inches, which is going to be most important for germination and beginning root growth anyway. I also bought a rubber mallet, but did not need it for sailing since the soil was moist. I did wash and dry the device before using it since a paper towel wipe revealed the device was dirty from the manufacturing process and I did not want to contaminate the samples. I also had to wash it a few times in between with a jet spray nozzle because my soil is almost all clay and kept sticking. I ended up using the rubber mallet to break some of the clay clumps after I air dried the samples over night on some but butcher paper inside my house.

Smooth, sturdy and effective, it was the only thing (along with its larger version) that could sample the clay soil I was working with.

I have been very impressed with the soil sampler. It is well made and easy to use. It has been really useful to see the soil structure at various points in my lawn so that I can add what is needed where it is needed. It has also saved me water, since I can now easily see how deep the water has penetrated the soil so no over watering which sure is handy if on a water meter :) I can also now see how compacted the soil is and how far the grass roots go down which helps to decide when/where to aerate for optimal lawn health. This is a very well made tool, highly recommended.

Muy buen producto, de buena calidad, funcional. Tardó un poco en llegar (se entiende, viene desde Ucrania), pero no importa. Muy buen precio.
