However, if you want to learn to hone and strop a straight razor this one will give you all the practice you need! After examining the blade under magnification when I received it, I started by masking the blade spine and setting the edge with a Smith's DBSF Diamond Bench Stone (Fine). For the price I wasn't at all surprised that it took a bit of work to achieve the initial razor edge.Once the edge was set I honed it on a set of soft, hard, black surgical, and translucent Arkansas stones -- because that's what I have. Even the translucent Arkansas stone wasn't able to give the blade a final mirror edge, and I'll be investing in a 12,000 grit Naniwa SP491 12000 Grit Honing Stone ASAP, but after honing with the Arkansas stones and stropping with a pair of GBS 3" X 21.5" Leather Barber Strop, Straight Razor Shaving Strop loaded with Leather Strop Sharpening Polishing Compounds 3 One Oz. Bars (One of Each), leaving one smooth strop side for a final polish, I got a shave every bit as clean as any I've gotten from my double-edged safety razors.Expect a good bit of work to get this razor shave-ready, but the work will pay off in a very nice razor. I'm well pleased.Follow-up, one week later: I received 8000 and 12,000 grit Naniwa Waterstones and a Norton Flattening Stone for Waterstones, 3/4" x 3" x 9" in plastic case yesterday and honed the edge to a mirror finish. Tried it this morning and got as close a shave as I've ever gotten. I should mention that I've also purchased a Dovo Best Quality 6/8" Full Hollow Carbon Steel Straight Razor - Black Celluloid and purchased this one because I didn't want to start honing the considerably more expensive Dovo until I was sure I knew what I was doing. I've been trading off between the two razors and now conclude that the Dovo was kinda sorta shave ready out of the box but would benefit from a good honing. This Cutthroat Gents is now the sharper of the two razors!What I've learned: The Arkansas oilstones work to put a shaving edge on a straight razor, but only kinda sorta. The Naniwa Waterstones do a much better job. Then, even though I'd honed this razor on the finest translucent oilstone it took forever to hone out the striations left by the oilstone using an 8000 grit Naniwa. I expect that working up through the grits using Naniwa stones would be much quicker and I've now ordered 400, 1000, and 5000 grit Naniwa Stones to make a complete set. When I get them I'll hone the Dovo razor and see how the two compare.The up-front cost of switching to straight razors is getting a bit steep -- the razors themselves are the cheap part(!) -- and there's certainly a learning curve involved in honing and stropping, but I'm entertained and I'm very impressed with the quality of the shave. ### ⭐ Look elsewhere for a cheap razor! *by E***S on November 7, 2017* I bought this knowing it was a cheap razor and would need a bit of work to bring it to the point where it was shaving ready. What I didn’t count on was a blade so poorly ground that even with nice stones and proper technique I was unable to hone this edge. The spine is of uneven thickness and wavy, as such this waviness transfers down to the blade when using traditional honing practices (laying the blade completely flat first on the spine and then the blades edge and gently drawing the blade down your stone) the whole blade would need to be trued if a proper home and face worthy shave is what you desire. Don’t get me wrong, it will shave your face, but it will drag and pull and require entirely too much effort to do so. I can’t even recommend this as a starter razor to learn how to properly hone your blade since it is so poorly ground that it will make it impossible to learn how to hone your blade. Then you have the scales (handle) which are warped and unfinished. The only thing this razor is good for is opening letters and packages or other uses where a sharp but not shave sharp blade would come in handy. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great Straight Razor *by A***R on May 7, 2017* For the money this straight razor seems to be very much so worth every penny. The blade arrived quite sharp and seems to be of fine quality. The handle is not the best handle out there but for 20 dollars it is great.
