I ordered this chest protector. What is the best way to wash it? Wiping it down isn't enough to get the smell out.

With our other gear we have wash in gentle cycle with a mild soap then let air dry. If you can get in the sun for 15 min that helps too.

I wear a mens xl shirt; what size should i order

I am a little on the stocky side, but im comfortable wearing medium t-shirts. the medium chest protector was too small, so I had to go a size up. I didn't have any problems with the large. I guess it depends on if you are wide, or tall.

I’m a size m in t-shirt my chest measure 40 inches, i’m 5 7’’ what size should i purchase?

Not sure exactly but I think the large. They are just a little on the small side but also when in use it tends to ride up towards the neck and chin.
