Would a small water bottle (500ml) fit in the front pocket? (upright, ideally) (prefer to keep it away from laptop)

I would say in principle yes, but it will fall over. There is no waterproofing so if it leaks you take a risk. The divider I use to put in a headset which folds flattish. It would be ok for A4 files & papers. I have put in the odd item in a hurry such as a jar of coffee, but my laptop has a padded cover.
