Prime-Line E 2402 Re-Keying Kit – Re-Key a Lock Kit with Pre-Cut Keys for Rekeying all your Locks to One Key, For Schlage Brand Locks, Type “C” 5-Pin Style Locks (1 Kit)

I ordered this with a Schlage keyless door entry lock and matching deadbolt so I could rekey them both to work on the same key. I had considered just taking them to a locksmith, but that would have taken time and money, until I found this kit. Bottom line: this kit worked perfectly as described, as long as you follow the instructions! I found a very useful video on YouTube by Prime-Line that walks you through step-by-step on how to rekey Schlage locks. The first lock I rekeyed, I was able to dis-assemble it and remove the lock cylinder very easily, however, I missed the step (my mistake for hurrying) where you use the plug follower when removing the plug from the shell and the bottom pins all fell out. Once I got them reassembled and followed the instructions it went very smooth. The video really helps, and the Prime-Line kit saved me a ton of time and money. The second lock I rekeyed went perfectly and took less than 5 minutes. I have big hands/fingers, but this was very easy to do. The Prime-Line kit worked exactly as described and if you purchase this kit, watch the video! Th printed instructions work fine, but I generally learn by watching somone do it, then doing it myself. All in all, a great product at a very reasonable price.

I bought 4 kits and have rekeyed 6 doors so far. The first rekey took the longest. After that the others were done in minutes. My first one I had slipped and the springs/etc came out. After the easter egg hunt to find them all, I was delighted to see the instructions covered how to recover from that. They were right on the money. I have 6 of each color cylinder in each set, though I did get 2 extra cylinders in one of the kits. A nit pick, the tweezers being plastic make it really tough to grab a perfectly round cylinder, which is what I had to do to recover from my sprung apart lock. Technically the kit isn't meant for that per say, so i don't fault them. I did find in my other locks if one of them had sprung apart, they had a small shoulder in the cylinder that the tweezers would've worked just fine on, so it entirely depends on what scenario you bump into. Every item in there is of decent quality considering the price and purpose. I don't know that the kits would last you a lifetime, but at a couple bucks per rekey, I'd say you'd be hard pressed to lose out on this deal. The only other gripe for me is the gold and silver are semi close, especially in lower light. The red and purple aren't too bad, but I'd have preferred if the purple were a brighter or darker purple. The colors were: purple, red, green, gold and silver. Making silver into blue would be my million dollar idea. The only other suggestion I'd have is to put the colors into each of their own baggies instead of everything in one bag. Would make QA checks easier and easier regardless of what the colors are as now each bag has color X in it. Heck, number the bags and shows the numbers in the instructions and who cares what color you think they are.

There is no question that this product works as advertised. I was able to replace the pins on both a lever lock and a deadbolt, and both work flawlessly, and very smoothly. However, it took me about two hours to get there. There are two main problems with this product: The documentation isn't all that great, and one of the included tools isn't useful when you get yourself into trouble. I probably should've read the entire instructions before starting, but I was confident in my knowledge of locks to proceed from step 1. Big problem. I overlooked the warning about removing the lock cylinder, and of course the springs and pins shot out everywhere. Aside from not clearly labeling all the parts in the lock body (there was only an exploded diagram), the spring warning came after the step where the lock cylinder is removed. That should've been highlighted in flashing lights. The reason it's a big deal about not letting the springs come out is that they're small, and so are the pins that rest on top of them. It'd be very easy to lose any of the components, possibly compromising the lock. Further, this brings me to my second complaint: the plastic tweezers. They're entirely incapable of pinching the springs and pins firmly, because when you squeeze them, they flex at the tip and lose their hold. I needed a separate set of metal tweezers from the medicine cabinet to reinsert the pins and springs. Once I got everything back together on the first lock, I reinstalled it in the door and found it to work just as I'd hoped. Again, very smoothly. Actually, it turns better than the stock pins that were in before. Feeling confident, I proceeded to the second lock, and of course, the springs and pins went flying again. Even when I knew what to expect and how to keep the springs in place, I still shot them everywhere. No matter, I got everything back in place once again, and reinstalled on the door to find a perfectly functional lock... two hours later. So, to summarize: The springs WILL come out. Once you cuss and find them all and get them back in place, it may happen again, but you'll get everything back together and move on. Then it WILL happen again. There's just no way to keep it from happening without practice and experience. All in all, a fun adventure since I had some time to kill, and an excellent end result, even with some speed bumps on the way. Oh, and much cheaper than a locksmith. I'd buy this product again, for sure, but I'd know to plan a little longer to install. EDIT: I bought another new Schlage entry lock and deadbolt kit, and re-keyed them both to match the first lock set that I did (mentioned above). The second go-around was much easier knowing what to expect, and I didn't have any of the springs pop out. I still highly recommend this kit!

Before opening the package I noticed the tweezers were twisted so jaws misaligned but didn't take a picture. Opened it and read the instructions, they seem thorough and easy to follow. I then took apart a dead bolt to get at its lock cylinder and unscrewed the cap, so ready to use the follower. it wouldn't go in, so I took a really close look at it. The I wanted to use is cracked lengthwise (see 1st photo) and flares so it actually too big around to fit into the cylinder. Looking at the other end (second photo) you can see the burrs and poorly molded plastic. I rolled and spun the end against my desk to ever so slightly round over the edge of the follower and with some fiddling finally got it to enter the cylinder, but it hung up on every pin so took a lot of tuning of it to get it to work its way in pushing out the keyed piece. I dumped the pins out and tried picking up a pin with the tweezers. They are crap (see third photo) with warped arms so nothing comes together correctly. I inserted one of the new keys (see fourth photo). It works, but has a 3 digit number stamped on it that is NOT the key code so of zero use, and takes up the only space on the key where you could stamp it (ex. I stamped GAR on my garage key and HS on my house key); otherwise the keys seem fine though they aren't the high quality brass ones that come with a new Schlage lock. The tool to remove the door handle (see fifth photo) that goes with the deadbolt worked well and was much bigger and easier to hold that the one that came with the Schlage set. The pins (same photo) being color coded versus being in numbered bags is genius but it also hides the native material, so I wonder if they are brass or another material ... if steel they will eventually rust and if aluminum they will wear out quickly ... but no way to tell. The tool to remove the C-clip (see sixth photo) on the door handle lock cylinder is the right thickness, made of steel so strong, but the inside corners of the end are rounded off instead of sharp so they aren't quite wide enough so kept slipping one side or the other into the gap in the c so it took a lot of attempts before it finally came off, and the tool is of no help putting the C-clip back on. I haven't actually opened the pack of pins yet because I'm seriously considering returning this junk and paying more for real tools and a full set of pins because I actually have more then 6 locks and they are all different; I was doing this just to make the most commonly used ones all the same and never open the others from the outside. So if I return and spend more I can rekey the entire house to be identical and just pick from one of the sets of keys I have that are original and have the keycode stamped on them.

I needed to rekey the 5 locks at my house. I contacted a locksmith and they said it would cost at least $130 and would be more depending on the type of locks. I have rekeyed locks before but didn't have tools for the Schlage locks and I didn't have any keys that I could use to change the locks to. For about $13, I was able to rekey all of my locks. There are enough pins to rekey 6 locks and the pins are color coded to make it easier to use. The instructions were pretty good and there is a video to show you how to do the job. Unfortunately, the first lock I did was a little bit different than the instructions covered. The tailpiece - part that goes through the door - didn't come off. Then when I was pushing the lock cylinder out, it hung up on something and I ended up with all the springs and pins going all over the place. I recommend looking for a video online before trying to put the springs back in. I spent a lot of time trying to put it back together and ended up messing up the springs. The other 4 locks were like the ones in the instructions and I was more careful about pushing the lock cylinder out. I was able to quickly rekey the 4 locks. I found a video online that showed how to replace the springs and was able to get the lock rekeyed. I would recommend this kit if you need to rekey your locks.

This kit makes it very cheap, but not easy, to rekey your own Schlage-style locks. The pins are color-coded. Unfortunately, I could barely tell some of the colors apart. The red and purple are similar, and the silver and gold are almost identical. I had to use a bright light and a magnifying glass to make sure I had the right pin. I had several problems while rekeying my three locks. 1. The plastic cylinder plug tool is terrible. The ends are uneven. As I pushed it into the the first of my locks, it caught on the upper pins and springs, tearing them out and mangling the springs. If you use this tool (I ended up using a long socket from a socket set instead.), use some sandpaper to flatten the ends of the tool, and round their edges before using it. 2. The tweezers are too bulky to get the upper pins and springs back in the body of the lock. After the disaster of problem #1, I had to get the springs and pins back into the body of the lock. The kit actually has instructions for doing this, but the tweezers provided wouldn't fit into the hole in the lock while holding a pin. I had to use a pair of forceps I had lying around. 3. The pins were too long for one of my locks. One of my locks is a very cheap unit. Apparently, it was not made to exactly the right dimensions. After rekeying and reassembling the lock, I found the key didn't work. It was a bit of an ordeal getting the lock apart again, but once I did, I had to file down the pins slightly. Anyone buying this kit should understand that one set of pins is not necessarily going to fit every lock. 4. The pins have sharp, right-angle shoulders. Please take my statements here with a grain of salt. This is the first time I've completely rekeyed a set of locks. In one of the better-quality locks I had, I could not remove the key after rekeying the lock. I'm pretty sure this was because the pins have sharp, right-angled shoulders, and the pins were having a hard time slipping back into the holes in the body of the lock as I pulled the key out. I found that rounding the top edges of each pin with a file fixed the problem. This makes the lock less secure, but more forgiving. If you are rekeying locks from different manufacturers, and of different quality, you might want to file the edges of the pins slightly to make them more forgiving of lock cylinders that don't have exactly the right dimensions. Rekeying my three locks with this kit was a pain, but totally worth the money I saved.

Great product and video, all my locks are Schlage and keyed same, some 20yrs ago! One lock broke, so replaced and wanted it keyed same. This worked, however its a color coded system on pins for thier supplied keys, not exactly what I wanted. I removed in order my old pins and knew thier numbers from the key stamp. I did cross check the measurements against new pins...very close. But I reinstalled the old pins for fors attempt and it works great. Saved the colored pins and kit for future needs? So you can change a Schlage lock to fit your existing schlage keys.

Great little kit. I did wind up needing more of the pins since I was doing several locks. But I was able to follow the instructions easily and even as a first time lock rekeyer was able to rekey three door knobs and three deadbolts, all Schlage brand, start to finish in about half an hour.

This is a True Schlage rekey kit. There are enough pins to re-key 6 locks the tools it comes with are cheap but can do the job. It did not come in the shown package, that's no big deal. The instructions are clear and precise. You may have read the other reviews and are now unsure about purchasing, let me assure you that you can't open a lock with a matchstick, with this kit or any other kit, my hypothesis on that comment is that he removed the Springs and the bible pins or his bible pins and springs are damaged that would let anything open the lock. This kit only replaces the key pins there are no bible pins or springs because to change a key all you need to do is replace the key pins. If your re-keying a lock without a key you will need to pick the lock in order to gut it. This is a remarkable deal and if you can follow the instructions then you can re-key your locks. I'm not aa professional locksmith but I have recently started lockpicking as a hobby and I bought 200.00 in Schlage Training locks I wanted the c-clip removal tool and I want to re-key my door at some point. I have to remove the lock from a doorknob for that I needed the tools and the instructions in this kit. I have learned enough about locks to tell you with confidence that this kit is genuine and that it's truly worth the money. Feel free to ask me questions and I will answer them. Photo 1 is some of the pins with a shot of my cutaway and the core the 2nd picture you can now see the colour pins in the core and you can see the cutaway bible that contains the pins and springs, the 3rd picture shows you 2 Mortise locks, 1 is pinned with its original key the other is pinned with this kit you and you can tell which is which the colour pins are in the lock with 3 keys and it is open the brass part shows where the pins line up so when the key aligns with it and then you can remove the key, in any other positions it's opening it. I didn't have to modify anything to make this work The two mortise locks cost around 15$ here on Amazon. There is a paper in the package that tells you which colour pin goes where. These are SC1 Schlage keys

I wasn’t very happy with the Prime-Line Products E 2402 Schlage Type C Re-Keying Kit. The product photos made the pins look correct, but in reality the colored pins were slightly off in size. Even a small difference like 0.001” makes a huge impact and in my case, it did. I installed the pins into my SCHLAGE B60N619 Single Cylinder Deadbolt, and the key started getting stuck when rotating, especially toward the right side. The cylinder would bind at a certain point, making the lock unusable. I finally took it to a locksmith, who pointed out that all five pins should be replaced because they weren’t matching true Schlage standards.

Yes, this is a great re-key set. It works for the Schlage lockset very well, and includes 6 sets of pins. However you can only re-key a lock (or all 6 locks) according to the instruction sheet provided. If you want to install a new Schlage lockset and have it match the existing ones in your home, then this package is not for you! And it wasn't for me for that very reason.
