Proper scholarship - at last
To qualify as a Suzuki teacher you need to write about Suzuki and his teaching philosophy. Up until now, this has been very difficult to do because all the writings about him have been written by acolytes and are not very professional or objective. It is also extremely important to consider Suzuki’s ideas in the context of a time and a place. Which this book does. We need to understand something of the ideas and interests that influenced the ‘remodeling’ of Japanese society after the war. Suzuki also wanted to change society - in a big way. His work has to be seen in the context of the soul searching that must follow a catastrophic war. This is a valuable text and it will be extremely useful to educators and to students of this period in history. Suzuki’s long and active life straddling the war allows a perspective on seismic shifts in Japanese society and beyond.
