We are bombarded by perfect interiors, images that aren’t attainable because they have been styled to the point where they bear no resemblance to reality. These interiors may be stunning, but they aren’t an honest reflection of how we really live and I think they make us feel bad about our own less-than-perfect homes. We are bombarded by perfect interiors, images that aren’t attainable because they have been styled to the point where they bear no resemblance to reality. These interiors may be stunning, but they aren’t an honest reflection of how we really live and I think they make us feel bad about our own less-than-perfect homes. Life Unstyled is about taking inspiration from real homes that are beautiful, creative and inspiring but at the same time a little rough around the edges, with signs of everyday life evident throughout. The first section, ‘Homes Unstyled’, sets out Emilly's manifesto for creating a stylish home that is beautiful but lived in. A Home is Never Done advocates allowing your space to evolve gradually so it is an ever-changing expression of your tastes and interests. Work with What You’ve Got suggests ways to make the most of the home you have rather than yearning for unattainable perfection. Signs of Life offers ideas for wrangling papers, clutter and other stuff. Creative Clutter tackles collections and displays, while Break the Rules rejects style diktats and shows how individuality can bring a home to life. The second section, ‘People Live Here’, visits real-life homes that are definitely not perfect yet display incredible style and creativity and reflect their owners’ needs, tastes and style. And throughout the book, quick fixes, DIY makes and ‘ Every Home Should Have…’ boxes offer creative solutions with unique results. Review: Beautiful, inspiring, not quite realistic - I love the philosophy presented in this book of surrounding yourself with things you love, and that imperfection can be embraced. The photos are gorgeous and stir the imagination. However, the homes pictured aren’t your average American home: very high ceilings, huge windows, built-in architectural character. The philosophy can still be used to make any home beautiful and welcoming home, but it would probably be harder to pull off in a smaller house with average ceilings and windows. Review: Lovely book - Love this book and the philosophy behind it. The book is very well-produced, with large, luscious photographs integrated nicely with text about the homeowners and their style and tips on how the reader can incorporate what's in the book in their own home. The overall aesthetic is colorful, improvisational, comfy, stylish, and a bit cluttery in a good way ("good clutter" says the author). The philosophy behind "Life Unstyled" is that a home should be a work in progress and perfection not the goal. This is both appealing visually and a relief mentally for the person who finds thinking about radically transforming their home intimidating and exhausting. This book is not for the person with a horror over clutter or a penchant for the highly polished and sleek. However, I disagree with the reviewers who objected to the amount of clutter in the homes featured -- the homes do "breath" and this is not your grandma's aesthetic. But the homes are stylishly homey and approachable, as is the author's voice and tips. Highly recommended.

Overused photos of the same rooms
Overall, I like the eclectic look that does not fit the typical decor trends and the notion that personal style should be embraced. There are several sections that push this in the book. My only issue is the several pages of repetitive room photos shot at different angles and not offering anything new in the photo composition. At one point, I thought several pages were printed twice in parts of the book. But, it was just the same rooms. It would have been better to keep photos of rooms together in a section (magazine article style). The current layout looks like they ran out of shooting locations. So, they just took shots of the same rooms and spread them throughout the book.

Eclectic decorating—this is for you
I have always decorated with what I’ve had or what I could thrift. People who visit will ask me what my style is and I always say boho eclectic. Now there’s a book for all of us who enjoy decorating kind of free and even a little messy. I love the subtitle ‘How to embrace imperfection and create a home you love.’ You won’t find perfect internet photos in this book, but a comfortable way to live.

Too much clutter leaves reader with a sense of claustrophobia
I was really looking forward to this book because, frankly, I love homes put together with things that people actually live with, collect and enjoy. While this book meets that goal, I became a little overwhelmed by picture after picture of clutter. Just because this is a book that shows people actually living with their own creative styling at home doesn't mean that every image needs to convey a sense of chaos. Plenty of people I've known follow the dictums of this kind of life, myself included, but with less of the claustrophobic. A few pages to rest the eye would have done wonders for this book.

Finally!!
After being saturated with images of Pinterest perfection, this book is a welcome, realistic styling guide for the rest of us. I have a ranch home from the 60’s and can only afford small improvements, one at a time. That means living with the house “as is”. This book shows you how to embrace those imperfections as part of your style. I’ve been known to have a “what’s the point” attitude when it comes to decorating....especially when there is so much “wrong” with my home. Now, I am inspired! This book is wonderful!

Salontafel boek.

bel libro, ottimi spunti
